⚡️New murals in Durham!
💧Today @cityofdurhamnc employees were invited to Imagine a Day Without Water while they walked the South Ellerbe Trail to see three new murals by local artists.

Every October, the City’s Water Management Department invites our community to come together for “Imagine a Day Without Water”- a National Day of Action to highlight the value of water in our daily lives and the systems that deliver it. This year, Water Management teamed up with the Cultural & Public Art Program to collaborate with three regional artists on new murals along the Ellerbe Creek Trail.

Have you been out on the trail recently between W Knox St and W Club BIvd. ?

Was a great experience to paint this piece for @creativedurham under the “A day without water” initiative to bring awareness to how the job of water conservation is in our hands! This is painted in a few days on the Ellerbe Creek Trail.

⚡️#MuralDurham refresh complete ✔️
📍Glendale Ave near West Corporation St.

🎨 Bethany Bash’s neighborhood mural “Parts of a Whole” just got a fresh glow-up right here in Durham, NC 💥 Big love to everyone who helped bring this beauty back to life—because every piece (and person) matters! 💛

Originally installed in 2020, the mural was funded as a part of the City of Durham’s @cityofdurhamnc Neighborhood Improvement Services Department’s neighborhood grant program. The neighbors along Glendale Ave near West Corporation Street commissioned and worked alongside local artist Bethany Bash @bethanybash_art to create a colorful ground plane public artwork. Bethany Bash stated, “It is about small communities also being part of larger communities, and illustrates the act of coming together, as well as ripples from movement. It was also important for this piece that community members were involved in selecting the design, and in the installation process.”

Big thanks to @creativedurham and NIS for funding this mural restoration, and another shoutout to all of the neighbors that helped bring this beauty back to life! 🙌

🎨 New Mural in progress! Fifty-five Durham residents came out to paint with @art_of_anon on Saturday.

“Community building is at the heart of our work and we feel is closely tied to our purpose for creating. We feel the element of collaboration has the ability to further connect people to public artwork in a meaningful and unique way, but most importantly, it connects us all to each other in a safe, intentional space.”
- @art_of_anon

This mural project is sponsored by the Durham County Public Art Program @durhamcountygov

Stay tuned for pictures of the finished artwork in the next few weeks!

🎉Durham has new public art at Wheels @wheelsdurham! Introducing "A Wheely Good Time" by award-winning artist Dare Coulter @darecoulter.

Fun Facts about the Artwork:
✨ Wheels Public Art is Coulter's largest public commission and the City of Durham's largest sculptural mixed media piece of public artwork to date.
✨ The artwork, titled "A Wheely Good Time," took over 16 months to design, fabricate, and install.
✨ The project was coordinated by Stephanie Minor and supervised by Rebecca Holmes of the Cultural & Public Art Program.
✨ The artwork began as digital designs by Coulter created using photo references of the skaters that participated in the Durham Central Park Skate Party.
✨ It was fabricated in Zebulon, NC by Oak City Customs (OCC) @oakcitycustoms.
✨ The team at OCC translated the artwork designs into cut files, then CNC cut & milled the figures from aluminum plate.
✨ Then, the figures were welded, sanded, polished, and transported to the powder coating facility.
✨ After the base color coat was applied, the figures returned to OCC to be hand-painted.
✨ OCC installed the sculptures and vinyl details were printed and applied to the pieces. by @mural_durham
