D(EE)GARI (Babak Modarresi & Sohrab Kashani)
11–27 September
~
D(EE)GARI (@d_ee_gari) is a collaboration between Babak Modarresi (@beelzee.bob) and Sohrab Kashani (@museumofsohrab) that builds a shifting language for the estrangement of encountering something that should feel familiar and doesn’t, or shouldn’t and does. Images, situations, and fragments are gathered before they disappear and held open to multiple readings at once, resisting any single account of what they are or where they belong. Recombined with other material and stripped of the meaning they arrived with, they shift medium, shape, material, and essence across the processes they pass through, giving way to hybrid objects, speculative environments, and worlds that don’t fully resolve, where the estrangement stays present and where Babak and Sohrab find themselves as much as they find the material.
~
At SIGN, this method is tested in physical space and in public for the first time. A single scene, a temporary virtual storage, built beforehand from the shared archive the two of them keep developing, holds everything produced and shown at SIGN. Objects drawn from it take partial physical form, some standing on their own, some grafted into objects already present. During the first part of their time at SIGN, new objects keep being produced from it. During the second part, these join what was already on view when the studio opened, and SIGN turns from a working space into an exhibition.

Second opening ~ SIGN as exhibition: 18 September, 17:00

In 2019 we launched The Other Apartment in our hometowns of Tehran and Pittsburgh.

From the original description:
The Other Apartment is a collaborative project between Pittsburgh-based artist Jon Rubin and Tehran-based artist Sohrab Kashani that occurs simultaneously in Kashani’s apartment in Tehran, Iran, and an exact replica of that apartment and all of its contents at the Mattress Factory Museum in Pittsburgh, U.S.. Using detailed photographs from Kashani (who is not able to travel to the U.S. due to the current Trump travel ban on Iranian citizens), the artists worked with a team of fabricators to meticulously recreate his Tehran apartment’s facade, interior architecture, and all of his personal possessions. From his soap dish to his furniture, everything in The Other Apartment has been purchased, altered, or entirely fabricated to replicate what exists in Kashani’s apartment.

For the past 11 years, Kashani has used his apartment as a space for exhibiting contemporary art and as an artist residency, one of the first of its kind in the country. From September 2019 through July 2020, Kashani and Rubin will operate the space together, producing exhibitions, programs, and events where every object, video, and performance that happens in one space is reproduced for the other, keeping both apartments identical across the 6,300 miles that separate them.

The Other Apartment functioned as a series of theoretical and practical questions within the sad absurdity of our current political condition: What if there was more than one absolute reality; can you build a space that functions as a political loophole; and what gets lost and gained in the act of doubling?

On January 16th, Ghazale Moqanaki and Marieke Peeters invite you to the launch of ‘Between our Fingers’, a publication exploring the conceptual framework of the doll’s house at @seelab_thehague . Bringing together essays, poetry, and artworks the book reflects on domesticity, precarity, fantasy, and agency. It examines the doll’s house as a symbol of control and desire, as well as a space of imaginative freedom in response to the increasingly inaccessible reality of housing as a right. Today, the doll’s house takes on many forms, revealing desires, anxieties, and imagined realities that are otherwise hard to articulate.
The event includes a performance program from 18:00-20:30 with readings, video installations, music by @ghazalfaghihi, and miniature food. Contributions to the publication include work by Lore Pilzecker, Sohrab Kashani, Kiara Amartya, Ghazale Moqanaki, and Marieke Peeters.
Thank you to @mzmni Mahtab Zamani Far for the design, @penseminhocas for the illustrations, and @kleopatra.on.hitaus Kleopatra Vorria for her proofreading and invaluable feedback.

Posted @withregram • @buitenplaatsbrienenoord “Hello Alter Ego”
An alter ego is another version of you—someone you sometimes want to be. This version might look, talk, and act differently, but it’s still you! It’s like trying on a new character to see the world in a new way. Ina Darakchieva, Philippine Hoegen, Sohrab Kashani and Nika van Woenzel are four performance artists who explore this idea in different ways: as social commentary, creative expression, coping strategies, art therapy, research, or political refuge. We’re excited to share this technique with anyone interested—no art experience is necessary! A safe and welcoming space is created, where you will be guided through finding and practicing your own alter ego.

This evening is part of the Data Diva Training Programma. Each week there will be another training session.
Before and after the session you can go into our Common Bread Sauna.

Practical:
Sauna open from 18:00 to 19:00 (with food)
Training session from 19:00 to 21:00
Sauna open from 21:00 to 22:00
‍Tickets with food are € 6,50, only joining for the training session is free (but do reserve a ticket by buying a free ticket)

Where Do We Go When We Are Not Here?, my Final Research Document created as part of the MAFA program at HKU @hkumafa, is fresh off the press. A copy will be available to browse during our show "Meanwhile," at Basecamp for Tactical Imaginaries (BAK) @bakbasecamp, Utrecht, from 18 to 29 June.

Developed alongside my performative installation work "The Transmission Diaries", the text explores movement, memory, voice, refusal, agency, glitch, and the spaces we shape (and that shape us).

I’m deeply grateful for the supervision of Annette Krauss, whose insights helped shape this process, and for the generous, critical feedback from Nuraini Juliastuti @generalworks_project and Falke Pisano. by @museumofsohrab

📍 Pauwstraat 13A, Utrecht
19–29 June
Opening: 18 June, 18:00–21:00

A glitch appears, a memory interrupts, a body transmits. The Transmission Diaries is a video installation about movement, memory, voice, and refusal. A message from the future that glitches the past. A body caught between presence and disappearance. A space that resists being fixed. taken in BAK, basis voor actuele kunst, Utrecht by @museumofsohrab

Posted @withregram • @marres_maastricht Workshop Training the Senses 🙆🏽‍♂️ Alter Ego: Training the Sense of Your Other Selves

An alter ego is another version of you - someone you sometimes want to be. This version might look, talk, and act differently, but it’s still you! It’s like trying on a new character to see the world in a new way.

🧍🏽‍♀️Many artists, like Beyoncé and the writer Elena Ferrante, use, or are, alter egos. Ina Darakchieva, Philippine Hoegen, Sohrab Kashani and Nika van Woenzel are four performance artists who explore this idea in different ways: as social commentary, creative expression, coping strategies, art therapy, research, or political refuge. We’ve had amazing experiences with our alter egos and find that they help us understand things better.

No art experience necessary! A safe and welcoming space is created, where you will be guided through finding and practicing your own alter ego.

Date: 29 November 2024
Time: 6 – 8PM
Location: Marres, Maastricht

Datum: 29 nov 2024
Tijd: 18:00 – 20:00u

Join us on 3 October for a presentation and screening night that explores the activities of @sazmanab and @rabtspace!

Presented by Sohrab Kashani (@museumofsohrab), (co-)initiator of these art initiatives from Tehran and current @hkumafa second years, the event will begin with a talk on alternative space-making, focusing on the hidden labor, strategies, and workarounds that sustain these initiatives. Aligning with the themes of the Hidden Arts exhibition program, Sohrab will share insights into their history of collective work as well as their curatorial and organizational challenges. The evening will also feature a screening of video works by Iranian artists, both from Iran and the diaspora, curated from the Sazmanab Video Library.

In addition to the above, selected publications from Sazmanab’s library, along with fragments from
the Sazmanab Digital Archive—including recordings of past talks, gatherings, and scanned library materials—will be available at Casco’s library for the remainder of the Hidden Arts exhibition.

Darookhaneh Apotheke Pharmacy
Sohrab Kashani (@museumofsohrab) & Anahita Razmi (@anahita__razmi)
Opening: 25/04/2024, 6 pm
Duration: 26/04 - 02/06/2024

Darookhaneh Apotheke Pharmacy is an Iranian pharmacy run by the artists Sohrab Kashani and Anahita Razmi. Its spatial set-up comprises of an installation filled with copies of Iranian pharmaceuticals and medication packages.
Emerging in the aftermath of a global pandemic and a period of shared devastation during which structural inequalities like the unequal distribution of medicine became pressing issues, Darookhaneh Apotheke Pharmacy links to the Iranian concept of “darookhaneh” (“daroo” (medicine/cure) and “khaneh” (home) = “the home for cure”, testing out what it can enable for culturally and disciplinary hybrid artistic work during crisis.

Contextual disparities, trade restrictions, and health and access inequalities between the Global North and the Global South are some of the topics echoed in this space.
Linking cultural and artistic questions to structural and economic ones, and bringing together selected speakers, collaborators, and the public, Darookhaneh Apotheke Pharmacy fosters conversations on these critical topics and their larger contexts.

The exhibition is accompanied by an interdisciplinary programme of events:
26/04/2024, 3-7 pm: Sohrab Kashani & Anahita Razmi: On-Site
28/04/2024, 6.30 pm: Annette Krauss & Serena Lee: Read-In
03/05/2024, 6.30 pm: Afsaneh Gächter: Medical Letters from Persia
07/05/2024, 3-7 pm: Anahita Razmi: On-Site
09/05/2024, 3-7 pm: Sohrab Kashani: On-Site

The project is curated by Christine Bruckbauer & Aline Lenzhofer. It is supported by @kunstkulturministerium, @stadtwien, @culturemoveseurope @basis.kultur.wien, Leopoldstadt.
