D(EE)GARI (Babak Modarresi & Sohrab Kashani)
11–27 September
~
D(EE)GARI (@d_ee_gari) is a collaboration between Babak Modarresi (@beelzee.bob) and Sohrab Kashani (@museumofsohrab) that builds a shifting language for the estrangement of encountering something that should feel familiar and doesn’t, or shouldn’t and does. Images, situations, and fragments are gathered before they disappear and held open to multiple readings at once, resisting any single account of what they are or where they belong. Recombined with other material and stripped of the meaning they arrived with, they shift medium, shape, material, and essence across the processes they pass through, giving way to hybrid objects, speculative environments, and worlds that don’t fully resolve, where the estrangement stays present and where Babak and Sohrab find themselves as much as they find the material.
~
At SIGN, this method is tested in physical space and in public for the first time. A single scene, a temporary virtual storage, built beforehand from the shared archive the two of them keep developing, holds everything produced and shown at SIGN. Objects drawn from it take partial physical form, some standing on their own, some grafted into objects already present. During the first part of their time at SIGN, new objects keep being produced from it. During the second part, these join what was already on view when the studio opened, and SIGN turns from a working space into an exhibition.

Second opening ~ SIGN as exhibition: 18 September, 17:00

Celebrating 10yrs+/- since the opening of Compass Trouble Again, TJ solo @ Sazmanab, Teheran 2015.

In 2013 I went to Teheran to see Hans Hollein’s 1970s Abgineh glassware and ceramic museum, and returned two years later to make this project about bootlegs, modification and distribution.

A painted portrait of Hollein from the Abgineh construction period oversees the entrance to the show, alongside trompe l’oeil remakes of Abgineh plinths with my shoes reflected in the chrome.

In response to trade sanctions in the 80s, Iran abolished international copyright law, effectively welcoming piracy of any international materials, edited to fit local guidelines.

The Sazmanab spaces were filled with prints on plastic suspended from the ceiling with illustrations of the original English “Introducing Postmodernism” cultural studies guidebook (which I’d been reading as a teenager), and their translated and sometimes censored Farsi bootleg counterparts.

The RKX series (print-on-glass over canvas with 3/4 size Bahman cigarette) shown here was produced between Iran visits and served as the catalyst for the Sazmanab show, originally appearing in part at XXXX Workshop Berlin and later Balice Hertling Paris.

Two music elements were commissioned in the frame of the show, where they were given for free to visitors: DJ Biscuit’s “Gate Sequencer” mix, and the KWC 92 “Iran” album (the printer added a “B” to KWC), the latter later released on the X.X.X.X. record label that shall remain unnamed.

Mimetic Club Bulletin issue 7 was available from a wall mounted block.

A Farsi translation of Amos Tutuola’s “The Palmwine Drinkard” was also commissioned and published on the occasion to pit the dynamics of both copyright permission and the censorship system against magical realism; it made it through the back door thanks to somebody’s uncle at the print workshop.

Heartfelt thanks to Sazmanab founder Sohrab Kashani for the invitation, to design master and longstanding collaborator Manuel Buerger, to Katayoon Askari who coordinated production, and everyone who came through - Marco, Elena, Heiner, Ghazal, Yousha, Mo +++ many more ❤️

Special edition by @museumofsohrab soon to be launched at Tehran Zine’s space
Sohrab Kashani (b. 1989, Tehran) is an artist working primarily with installation, film, and performance. His work often explores themes of space, body, and perception. Kashani assumes the persona of Super Sohrab, an alter-ego superhero who employs satire and the embrace of failure as tools to navigate the complexities of everyday life. Kashani also runs Sazmanab, a curatorial platform that once operated as an art space and residency programme in Tehran and is currently based in the Netherlands. His recent collaborations and duo exhibitions include Darookhaneh Apotheke Pharmacy at uqbar projectspace in Berlin (2022) and The Other Apartment at Mattress Factory Museum in Pittsburgh, US (2019-2020).
