UPDATE on VIDA. At 17 years old 👵🏻 she has only a couple of her senses left. She can smell 👃🏻 and taste 👅 and this is about it. Vida’s mind 🧠 💪🏼 is still strong (unlike Eatons who slowly deteriorated ). Vida is still a 🧛🏻‍♀️ 🧨 🫅 🐝 !
Like any of us who age she has her slow days and other days where you wonder where all the energy came from. Now that Eaton has passed away she has mainly been staying at my best friends. They live a quiet life, semi-retired (WFH when they work) and closer to any emergency care. She is still staying with us a couple nights a week which Tate especially appreciates. I was initially worried about her after Eaton passed away but she continues to show us her independent nature and badass ways. Love you, Vida (vee-dah). ❤️ by @musicbikedogs

🛎️ Reminder: Sadly almost 400,000 dogs were euthanized in shelters last year. Leading causes: space constraints and reduced adoption rates.

Please consider adopting a dog from your local shelter or dog rescue.

🥳 Well after visiting four different rescues Tate finally picked his best friend. Meet our newest pack member Ryder.

Ryder was one of the Fellowship puppies (Merry was her name) from @heartlandhumanecorvallis . She is 3.5 months old, female, mix breed. We were Ryder’s third interest. Her first owners adopted her and after a week returned her due to the dogs not getting along. Ryder’s second meet and greet didn’t go well either due to dogs not getting along. Well, as you can see Tate and Ryder’s meet and greet went well. It has only been five days and she is already starting to get the lay of the land.

Ryder loves people, a cozy fireplace, eating before 5:00 a.m., sleeping before 8 p.m., snuggling, stopping to smell the roses, respects her elders, practices early morning yoga, wishes to fetch but can’t beat Tate in a race , dislikes sweaters but will put one on knowing it means adventure time. The best part after my partner has been away for 11 hours, Ryder wags her tail with joy to see her truck pull up and jumps up with excitement to greet her at the door.

We learned a lot from what we wanted in a dog from our last three week trial period with Rye. We don’t know if Ryder has a prey drive, as this is always a concern with all of our farm animals. So far so good. She is highly trainable and I think we can work with her. 🤞🏼

@nwdogproject Dogs like 🔹Greta🔹are waiting at many rescues and county shelters across the world looking for their forever home! Almost 400,000 dogs are euthanized in the 🇺🇸 yearly. Most of these animals are healthy and adoptable. It still boggles my mind with so many animals dying in shelters, someone would BUY a dog from a pet store. 😡. There are so many breeders out there who are disgusting PUPPY MILLS. The conditions these moms and dads live in just to be breeders/money makers makes me so sad.

In honor of Eaton who was scheduled to be euthanized but rescued in the nick of time, please take time to donate to your local rescue and if you are in #eugeneoregon send $5 or more to @nwdogproject

A couple of weeks ago after Eaton passed away I visited @nwdogproject to help with some of my grieving. And trust me it worked to be around a bunch of rescue pups. If you can’t donate at this time consider volunteering at your nearby rescue or shelter. Thank you. @nwdpOR = Venmo by @musicbikedogs

Dear Eaton,

💔 Your passing has been a hard one. I thought I would be prepared but I wasn’t. When you were alive I told you if I could turn back time I would go back to the day I met you and relive all 14 years with you. Now that you are gone, I mean this even more. You added so much joy in my life. Who knew a 15lb poodle could just be such a fluff ball of amazingness.

You had an immense amount of energy for living and had an unlimited amount of love to give. Yes, you were my buddy on all our adventures in the mountains, lakes, rivers and snow. But our biggest adventures were at home as you were with me during some pivotal times in my life (late 30s-early 50s). Thank you for being my emotional blanket during perimenopause (I never cried so much). You were always in my corner .

There truly wasn’t a person or dog you didn’t like (unless the dog wanted to share my lap). You brought laughter and smiles to so many people (even via IG). It was so easy to take you anywhere. Although you loved to ride in the car 🚗 , I had to be very careful not to run over the rumble strips. 😬. No matter what the weather or how fast we were driving you liked to have the window cracked so you could take in the fresh air. You truly embraced the “go with the flow” attitude. Ranch dog Eaton who knew? 🤠

You loved food…and I hope you get an endless supply wherever you are. We still feel your presence in our kitchen. I am still watching to make sure I am not tripping over you. Muscle memory at its finest.

Now I can’t put into words (not yet 💔 ) witnessing the Veaton (Vida and Eaton) circus 🎪 🤼 for the last 14 years. The two of you had such a continuous affection and comfort for each other. It was a beautiful love. Oh and there was the shared mischief on our adventures. As your dementia got worse she slowly let you be. I think this has helped Vida during this time…though I make sure she sleeps with your blanket every night.

Your endless affectionate did more for me than you probably ever could understand. I love you so much and I will never forget you. #belikeaton

PS. Thanks for showing Tate the ropes. He really looked up to you unless he was sitting on my lap. 😉 by @musicbikedogs

Tate had his very first canoe camping trip. 🛶 🏕️ Vida at 16 years old was there to show him how to be a good camping dog. Vida was such a good mentor on so many levels. I can’t believe how much energy she still has.

Tate got into the routine of things rather quickly and was an awesome camping companion. It made me so happy to see him have so much fun swimming , running, digging, bird watching, and being able to take in so many new smells. I am glad to know he enjoyed camping as much much as I do.

Eaton stayed at home with my partner. It isn’t best with his dementia (restlessness , disorientation and anxiety) and vestibular episodes to take him out to the wilderness. I really missed Eaton. But I know my partner was spoiling him up and he would be much safer and comfortable at home.

When the time comes it will be the hardest goodbye.

As we sit here right now next to the ocean I wanted to let you know…you have been more than a DOG to me. You have been my home every where we go, you have made me smile like no other, you have been there to hold during the heaviest and darkest days of my life. I know no matter where you are in spirit I will still call out to you when I get anxious and scared. You rarely showed fear. You are so confident and strong.

I promise you this when you are ready to be at peace I will be strong so your soul can be free of pain and suffering.

Until then…I am so grateful you are still alive so I can smother you with kisses, hear your paws in our hallway and continue sharing new memories. But please know I will never forget the memories we have shared because they have been some of the best in my life. Thank you for everything. I love you deeply, Eaton. #belikeeaton by @musicbikedogs

I am trying to handle this incredible pain I am feeling of the thought of losing my best friend. Eaton is still with me alive and old…the last 48 hours I have been letting Eaton know how blessed that I have been to have the most adventurous, goofiest, talented, loving, strong, confident, happy go-lucky dog in the world! As silly as it has seems I have been going through a lot of pictures with him and reliving these memories while he is still alive. I have been reflecting on a life we have lived which has been such a frickn’ incredible journey. I know our dogs don’t live forever and this is what I need to face. I am a changed person for having Eaton by my side for the last 14 years. I wouldn’t never have taken the steps I did without him. Bear with me…I will be making a lot of these very lengthy videos. I know there are two-three of you who will actually watch the whole thing and do this for you too. Thank you for the IG world for loving this guy. #belikeeaton keep the peace ☮️ by @musicbikedogs

Our dearest Tate, the last year you have brought joy to our lives here on the farm. You have gone from a brown dog to almost beige dog. You have managed to bring a smile to everyone’s face (well maybe not always Eaton). Thank you for loving all of us unconditionally, and teaching us a thing or two about patience, and about understanding that BIG things come in little packages. I love you beyond measure, I hope you always know that this is your forever home and we are so lucky to have you in it. Cheers to many more years of snuggles (you love to snuggle), tails wagging, adventures, and being a champion farm dog. @nwdogproject , thank you for rescuing dogs like Tate.
