WHO WE ARE: MuVola APS is an Italian cultural association dedicated to vocal improvisation, collective singing, and participatory performing arts.

Founded in 2023, we create spaces where artistic practice, learning, research, and community can meet - connecting local roots with a growing international network of artists, facilitators, organisations, and communities.

This space will be a living archive of our work: the projects we develop, the people and places we encounter through a shared commitment to vocal improvisation and collective practice, the questions we explore, and the creative processes that emerge along the way.

TRACCE NEL PRESENTE | Site-Specific Performance

Bentivoglio, Italy - 4 September 2026.

An excerpt from the closing performance of the public sharing of Tracce nel Presente, an international artistic research residency exploring the relationship between voice, movement, collective improvisation, and territory.

This site-specific improvisation emerged from the encounters and experiences of the preceding days: the landscapes explored, the stories shared, and the relationship established with the people and cultural memory of Bentivoglio.

Following a film screening and a live performance by the Coro delle Mondine di Bentivoglio, the improvisers brought these experiences into a collective improvised performance, allowing the present moment to be shaped by the voices, histories, and relationships encountered along the way.

TRACCE NEL PRESENTE - inside the process

An international artistic residency at La Casona in Ponticelli, Bologna, Italy, bringing together 16 artists from across Europe to explore voice, movement, collective creation and our relationship with territory.

Over five days, artistic research intertwined with living as a temporary community. From the first evening, we encountered one another through improvisation, while the shared organisation of everyday life became another layer of collective practice.

Our days often began with movement practice facilitated by movement consultant Neža Pele, opening possibilities for voice and movement improvisation. One session began with a 45-minute individual exploration of emptiness and emergence: starting from doing nothing and allowing action to arise from what emerged.

Other sessions investigated technical elements of ‘Murmuration’, a specific form of improvisation - unison, direction and leadership within the flock, and subtler possibilities for physical communication.

Our relationship with the territory began form through our encounter with the Coro delle Mondine di Bentivoglio. Through conversations, personal histories and singing together, we encountered a musical tradition inseparable from the local rice fields and the lives lived within them. A song they taught us entered our public sharing the following evening, with the Coro delle Mondine as our guests.

After the performance, the research moved into the landscape itself, through filming and site-specific improvisation in places including the former Bentivoglio rice fields, now Oasi La Rizza.

Improvisation brings many relationships into play: with oneself, with another, and with the group. Tracce nel Presente sought to bring another, often less visible relationship into the foreground: that with territory. Landscape is not simply where artistic practice happens. It carries people, culture, memory and evolving histories. By entering into relationship with it, these inevitably begin to inform what we create - and the traces we leave in one another.

Some moments captured by the incredible eye of Luigi Savino
during the presentation of Tracce Nel Presente / Traces in the Present the project, held on Friday, September 4th, in the evocative setting of the former cemetery in Saletto-Bentivoglio (Bologna).

The performance involved 16 European artists—representatives of the vocal improvisation movement—who explored a new language capable of connecting the territory of the Mondine of Bentivoglio with their own artistic practice, creating a dialogue between place, memory, body, and voice.

TRACCE NEL PRESENTE / TRACES IN THE PRESENT
International Voice & Movement Improvisation Residency

On Friday, 4 September sixteen artists representing different vocal improvisation communities from across Europe came together to encounter this territory to allow themselves to be moved and transformed by it.

Tracce nel Presente is an artistic research project that seeks to make visible the people, stories and identities that form a living part of a landscape - one that is human, layered and continuously transforming.

Bentivoglio, in the province of Bologna, is a territory shaped by farmers and caretakers of the land, by women and communities who learned to organize, support one another and struggle together for better living conditions. It is also a territory of music and song. It is the territory of the Mondine di Bentivoglio, who welcomed us and offered us a gateway into this place. Women who raised their voices singing of work, hardship, struggle and love, who built relationships and community through song. Who have had the courage to keep telling the stories of what has been - and who still raise their voices for peace today.

We carry immense gratitude towards everyone who made this encounter possible, and for all those who were present with us, physically or with their hearts.

Retraite du Nord | Building bridges - Meet Giulia Ledda, Artistic Director of Koax Theatre and member of Les Prochaines

An important bridge in making the European collaboration behind Retraite du Nord possible was Giulia Ledda @giuliazulie - Artistic Director of Koax Theatre @koax_theatre and member of Les Prochaines @les_prochaines, our local partner for this project.

Retraite du Nord | Where the idea began - Meet Marie Vander Elst of Les Prochaines

The first seed of Retraite du Nord came from Marie Vander Elst: the desire to create a space in Northern Europe where experienced vocal improvisers could meet, practice and exchange knowledge with one another.

Together with Les Prochaines @les_prochaines - including Zoé Sevrin, who contributed to organizing the residency although unable to be with us in person - that initial idea gradually grew into Retraite du Nord.

In this reel, Marie takes us back to the beginning and shares how the idea for the residency was born.

From one person’s impulse, through relationships and collective work, a space for encounter and artistic research took shape.

Retraite du Nord | Meet Les Prochaines

Behind Retraite du Nord is Les Prochaines @les_prochaines, the collective that initiated and organized the residency.

Les Prochaines brings together female artists with a shared interest in mutual support, collective practice and creating spaces for artistic exchange:

Retraite du Nord | Inside the collective research

A few days into Retraite du Nord, the residency is taking shape through the contributions of the artists who inhabit it.

Through facilitated sessions, open practice and collective reflection, we’ve explored different approaches to collective vocal improvisation and interdisciplinary practice: harmony and rhythm, voice and movement, sensory and relational work, vocal percussion, musical language, structure and emergence. Each proposition is an opportunity to encounter another artist’s practice and perspective.

We have also begun sharing our research: Giulia Matteucci facilitated a Musical Fluency workshop exploring modes and circlesinging, the approach she developed inspired by Roger Treece; this afternoon Chiara Cortez will share her ongoing research into Murmuration, rooted in the work of Rhiannon.

But the research extends beyond artistic practice into how we live and organize collectively.

Within a framework offered by Les Prochaines, responsibilities are distributed through assemblies and a collective sign-up system: from facilitating and decision-making to cooking, cleaning, meals, recycling and caring for our shared spaces.

These structures also carry knowledge from the wider vocal improvisation community, including practices encountered through the French Enchanted Circle and collective-intelligence experience brought by members connected to Labophonique.

Knowledge travels between artists and collectives — through musical practices, but also through ways of organizing, facilitating, caring and making decisions together.

How do we create together? How do we live together? How do we distribute responsibility?

The same matters that appear inside an improvisation often reappear around the table when we make decisions about living together in a shared ecosystem.
