Here's video # 4 of 5 on the Mozambique rhythm.
Finally getting caught back up with the Mozambique series after spending a lot of time learning to play the montunos on piano and mixing. I wanted to show where some of the drum set greats that we all know got this rhythm (NYC variant) from so here are the timbale and tumbadora phrases from "Que Suena La Orquesta" by bandleader & composer Eddie Palmieri and his percussionist Manny Oquendo inspired by Izquierdo's creation (the rhythm) of the same name in Cuba.
The last 3 videos are well known versions played by @tommyigoe @dr.stevegadd and Elvin Jones . This is a simplified version of his groove on John Coltrane's "A Love Supreme " Pt. I Acknowledgement.
The Mozambique rhythm originated in Cuba by Pedro Izquierdo (AKA Pello El Afrokan) inspired by Conga de Comparsa rhythm styles used in the carnival music of Cuba.

🏋🏿 It took a while but I'm up to 4 days a week consistently. Working towards getting back to 6 days a week like I was back in the day in Japan. 2006-2009, gym at lunch or after work doing 7 high energy shows drumming/running/jumping and projecting our voice w/no mic, straight cardio then on one of my off days.
That was THE best shape of my life and my drumming dexterity and 4 limb balance was on another level then. Now to find the quality of good (real) food I had there here in Florida 😅 by @mw.arts.entertainment

🎧 Improvising on the clay igbo drum, a vintage temple block and a mini cajon-snare . No mics, EQ or anything, just straight phone A/V. I really miss the schlagwerk one I used to have BITD, TSA destroyed that one by @mw.arts.entertainment
