ROOM FOR REST / 01

Introducing you to what will be an ongoing photographic conversation exploring what rest means to artists and makers.

For this first story, I spent time with Michelle @mwmakes a leatherworker, in her studio.

Q:How do you interpret rest?

We spoke about the different forms rest can take, both physical and mental. About listening to the body, being mindful of its limits and the importance of caring for the hands that make.

Q:What does rest allow space for?

Freedom. The opportunity to step outside the structure of work and allow the day to unfold more naturally.

Our conversation led us to discuss how rest allowed space for discovery, curiosity and experimenting. Experimenting with different materials such as dried flowers, painted tiles brought back from travelling were all things that would eventually and organically come back to inform her practice.

Later by chance when photographing we discovered the words Creative Growth in the notebook, alongside thoughts about experimenting which was key to our conversation.

Our conversation served as a reminder that rest can create space for curiosity, exploration and new ways of thinking.

This is the first in a series of conversations with makers, with each person introducing me to the next.

Just some of the items that I personalised at Salad Days market on Saturday! I love hearing the stories behind the personalisation requests and who the items are being gifted to. I’m trying to get better at capturing items that I personalise on the spot, especially as so many of these items wallets were one-offs!

Had a pleasure meeting so many of you, connecting over the smell of leather, the appreciation of the material and the process of making! I’m so pleased the new one-off wallets went down well and so many found new homes!
