ROOM FOR REST / 01

Introducing you to what will be an ongoing photographic conversation exploring what rest means to artists and makers.

For this first story, I spent time with Michelle @mwmakes a leatherworker, in her studio.

Q:How do you interpret rest?

We spoke about the different forms rest can take, both physical and mental. About listening to the body, being mindful of its limits and the importance of caring for the hands that make.

Q:What does rest allow space for?

Freedom. The opportunity to step outside the structure of work and allow the day to unfold more naturally.

Our conversation led us to discuss how rest allowed space for discovery, curiosity and experimenting. Experimenting with different materials such as dried flowers, painted tiles brought back from travelling were all things that would eventually and organically come back to inform her practice.

Later by chance when photographing we discovered the words Creative Growth in the notebook, alongside thoughts about experimenting which was key to our conversation.

Our conversation served as a reminder that rest can create space for curiosity, exploration and new ways of thinking.

This is the first in a series of conversations with makers, with each person introducing me to the next.

Behind the scenes: the making of the Vabel Townhouse keyrings.

Each Vabel Townhouse keyring is handcrafted by Michelle Wong, a London-based leather artisan whose practice is rooted in architecture, clean geometry, and the belief that everyday objects deserve to be made with care.

Made from vegetable-tanned leather, every piece is cut, burnished and assembled using traditional saddlery techniques. Designed to age beautifully, the leather develops a rich patina over time, becoming uniquely shaped by its owner’s daily life.

For us, these keyrings reflect the spirit of considered living beyond the walls of our building: objects created with purpose, care, and longevity in mind, by hands that understand why it matters.

LCW Day 4, part 1. I left Hornsey and got the train down to Highbury & Islington and then got the Overground round to Hoxton to the @museumofthehome for the @vigourandskills show for @londoncraftweek . It was great to meet the organisers and some of the makers there including @v_h_studio @helenapowell_textiles and see the work of @design_nationuk members @tonevonkrogh and @ooak_creation .

This Saturday at the Museum of the Home, Michelle Wong will be leading a Leather Mini Envelope and Keyring Workshop as part of our London Craft Week weekend.

A lovely introduction to leathercraft, this hands-on session is a chance to learn basic saddlery techniques while making your own personalised mini envelope and keyring.
