POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
On 26 September, the cohort of Cohesive Correspondence* reunited at the Reading Room to release the publication-in-progress React or Otherwise / Solidaritie(s). Evolving in tandem with the blog maintained by the cohort which you can find via the link in bio, the publication marked a momentous occasion to come together and share the work through an informal gathering and a dialogue over coffee and snacks.

The session also marked the transition from the first phase of the CC reading module into the second, where new participants from extended circles will be brought into the reading spirals, expanding the network of readers and co-thinkers. The group began by welcoming the new readers through a round of introductions. The older cohort shared reflections on the gatherings so far, with many expressing how slowness as a method had opened up new insights into the possibilities of what the creative process could look like.

Since May this year, the group has been convening in person and online to explore slow reading as a method, building upon habits, rituals and associations connected to the library. During the process, 35 folx have been part of the dialogue in the cohort.

It was a beautiful and deeply moving night—without electricity, without moonlight, illuminated only by pottery, lamps, poetry, and the people who gathered together. In that darkness, a few small flames became a reminder that even a little light can carry meaning.

We dedicated this night to our solidarity with Srishti Gupta following her arrest by the Uttar Pradesh Police, and to everyone whose voice is being suppressed for questioning, protesting, or demanding dignity.

Hidden Artist Initiative expresses its deep concern over the continued imprisonment of Srishti Gupta and others arrested in connection with the 2026 Noida workers’ protests. Workers asking for fair wages, eight-hour working days, and humane conditions were asking for nothing more than the right to live with dignity.

For us, this was not simply a poetry gathering. It was a small act of listening, questioning, and standing together. There was no moon that night, but there were lamps. There was darkness, but there were voices. We hope to continue creating such spaces—in different forms, under different names—where poetry, art, questions, and solidarity can remain alive.

Thank you to everyone who shared this beautiful night with us.

With gratitude and solidarity,
Hidden Artist Initiative.

Every journey is shaped by the people who quietly stand beside us—encouraging us, believing in us, and reminding us that every small effort matters.

Looking back at our session on 21st July, we are filled with gratitude for everyone who became a part of it. Some stood behind the scenes, some shared the stage, and many simply showed up with open hearts. Each of you became the backbone of that conversation.

From the bottom of our hearts, Cross Cat Collective would like to thank @mx.kaurchimuk , @tilottama_ and @zmayet__ for inviting us to be a part of this beautiful gathering. Our heartfelt gratitude to @vidyashivadas Ma'am for her unwavering presence, and to @folksong_nilkanta Da, whose soulful songs added warmth and depth to the evening. Thank you to Partha and Vijit for sharing our journey with such sincerity, and to everyone who joined us, listened, engaged, and made the conversation richer with your presence.

Thank you for walking this path with us.
Thanks @fica_india and , @vadehraartgallery to provide such a engaging space. taken in Delhi, India by @mx.kaurchimuk

A dialogue with Cross Cat Collective (Partha Banik) and জমায়েত/zmayet (Tilottama B.)
Moderated by Sabar Saluja

In collaboration with Reunion in the form of Exchange / Within Cohesive Correspondence.

Tuesday, 21 July
5 - 8 PM

As part of FICA’s ongoing exhibition ‘towards minor gestures: intensities in the making’, we invite you to an open conversation between Cross Cat Collective (Partha Banik) and Zmayet (Tilottama B.) around the landscape of independent self-publishing and the ecosystem of comics, zines, and paper culture between Tripura and Dhaka and their neighbouring regions.

Reunion in the Form of Exchange / Within Cohesive Correspondence led by Kaur Chimuk, is an initiative that engages with temporary archives—in the form of publications, drafts, revisions—from artist-run spaces/units and collectives.

Cross Cat Collective is an independent comix crew from Tripura, dedicated to self-publishing comics, zines, graphic novels, stickers and posters. But more than just making cool art, they’ve built a wide community of scribblers, writers, activists, and self-taught artists—all coming together to create and collaborate.

জমায়েত/zmayet (pronounced as jomayet) is an open-initiative operating as a cooperative, interdependently in between Bangladesh and India. As an initiative, they are curious to amplify, recollect and share the perspectives of counter-cultural, loose narratives through diverse graphical mapping/tracing. zmayet is interested in expanding slowly over time through participatory events, community pop-ups, shared libraries, and inclusive collaborations.

Sabar Saluja is interested in storytelling. Her practice so far has been grounded in her fascination with nature, continuous cycles of life and death, growth and decay, the cellular and the planetary. She works across multiple mediums including stop motion animation, photosynthesised image-making, painting, sketchbooking, and lecture performances as means of formulating, creating and sharing her inquiries.

Due to my travel, I was not able to be present there/ @chennaiphotobiennale in person, but it was an emotional exchange. Especially after the Bill, our voices have become even more narrowed, and losing support systems and allies has almost become the norm. During such difficult times, dialogue has always helped.

Thank you for the care and support everyone extended in such a short period. It truly means a lot. A special thank you for preparing the pamphlets so precisely, even in my absence. It is solidarity for this attempt....

1
My sincere thanks to Nimmi and Chiranjeeve for helping make this connection possible, and much care for their compassion.

2
A brief note on the sharing / A South Asian Queer Pamphlet/@asouthasianqueerpamphlet is a transcendental concept through which we have shared our curiosity about future methods addressing larger narratives around subversive queer intersections. Through this process, we have managed to develop a transdisciplinary network comprising an interactive playstation, a series of publications, mixed media residues, durational rituals, and an ongoing curatorial dialogue. This initiative has been curatorially fermented by Kaur Chimuk with durational conversations involving Soumya Mukhopadhyay as a safe ally.

As part of the Listening Academy in Vienna, I had the honour of presenting part of my research, ‘Co-Listening. Sound Practices and Processes of Repair from the Indian Subcontinent’, at Brunnenpassage.
Engaging with the notion of « critical co-listening, » as proposed by Budhaditya Chattopadhyay (2022), the project positions—and experiments with—listening as a possible and radical practice of repair.

My deepest thanks to my companions, Kaur Chimuk, who joined from afar by performing live from an Indian train in connection with my voice, and with whom I have never stopped practising Co-Listening.

Heartfelt thanks to Brandon LaBelle for believing in this project, and to the wonderful Zuzka Ernst and Susana Ojeda for their generous hospitality and for weaving this experience together. ♥️

This project is supported by a grant from the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity of the Italian Ministry of Culture under the Italian Council Programme (2025).

For two weeks across May and June, the Reading Room was filled with conversation, laughter, movement, and debate, as children from our Lado Sarai neighbourhood gathered each day for the FICA Summer Camp.

Led by artist-educators Nilanjana Nandy, Tilottama B. and Kaur Chimuk, the camp brought together 15–20 children of different ages to create, experiment and spend time together. There was much excitement in the weeks leading up to the camp; the children made posters, invited friends, planned performances, and even debated who the library belonged to more – often based on who had discovered it first. A heartening piece of evidence that the Reading Room was fast becoming part of their everyday lives.

The first week with Nilanjana Nandy introduced new materials, techniques and ways of looking. The children expressed themselves through paper masks (with delightful, kooky features), traced their portraits on butter paper to make pop art avatars of themselves, and composed watercolour landscapes based on their walk from home to the library, amongst other exercises.

In the second week, the children collectively created a publication with Tilottama B, reflecting on questions like: What do we do in the library? What do we want from it? Who does it belong to? Through writing, drawing and discussion, they imagined the library together, producing a publication titled Milte Milte Aa Gaye, that became both a record of their experiences and a collective vision for the space.

The workshops culminated in an Open Day with a screening of My Neighbour Totoro, dancing, singing, and an exhibition of the children's work for their parents and families. We imagined the Open Day as an important moment of listening for FICA. We wanted to establish this as a meeting point to help us understand how the Reading Room is perceived within the neighbourhood we occupy. As we continue imagining a long-term programme for young people, these exchanges help us think about how the Reading Room can become not just a space in Lado Sarai, but one meaningfully shaped by the people who live here.

Through the intimate acts of drawing, writing, stitching, and map-making, this six-month engagement created a safe ‘learning hut’ for introspection, allowing participants to chart their own emotional geographies and share their hopes.

The engagement wove the floating, transient nature of memory into a tangible tapestry of livelihood. The core motivation revolves around ancestral knowledge, care for one’s surroundings, the dream of offering hope, the challenges faced in everyday life, and the rituals through which they find their strength.

Laila shared an image of an open window adjoining her bed, where she enjoys reading her favorite book while sipping tea. Shikha shared her passion for teaching young learners, while Rani reflected that her entire scope of work such as seed collection, supporting young girls and women, raising her own children, and managing household chores; is all part of the ‘বৃহত্তর সংসারের কাজ’ (the greater work of the household).

Women who engage with us professionally are seed collectors, textile designers, pickle makers, honey collectors, some work for children at khelaghor, some take responsibility for young girls’ issues. And through their knowledge and action in these areas we had the chance to learn many things and it’s continuing.
Most of the women have a keen interest in sewing and textile arts. Through this medium, they express the places where they belong, the strength they find in freedom, and their journey of overcoming every hurdle.
Throughout the workshops, the process was not merely about final outcomes, but rather about creating an attentive mood for learning, acknowledging, and revisiting the inner lives of a community often defined only by its external struggles against a fragile ecology.

হতাম যদি… a butterfly, a bee, a snake, a bird, and an insect...” started our introduction where we all renamed ourselves to embrace the identities that play a crucial rule in our environment with the young learners from the ‘khelaghar’ a center of Sithilia, Sundarban.

Sithilia - a place where one travelled from the city, crossing three rivers and many miles and it was more than worth it to witness the emergence of a new union, where a commune of young learners curious, attentive, and eager to participate.
We adapted the modules into a more open-ended and playful format through song, gesture, drawing, doodling, and stories about care and friendship in our shared ecology.

During the subsequent months, the modules adopted a multi-sensory approach. A session called একটি থালার গল্প (The Story of a Plate) demonstrated how food works as an intimate language of communication, illustrating our experiences of comfort, scarcity, and sensory joy. It also explored the transformation of personal cravings into a collective struggle during the monsoon season, when floods and heavy rain are the primary constraints in this delta region. This exercise further elicited poetic expressions of forgotten foods and recipes that carry nostalgia, a sense of belonging to one’s home, and knowledge of ancestral cooking practices and conservation methods.
