POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
I’ve always been fascinated by the way our hair stories travel across generations and geographies.

What a gift to share space and spend time with @naturallyisis who shared her rich history and energy with me and @nitashiajohnson.

Hear more of her story at tomorrow’s showcase for Crowning Glory: And Ode to Black Hair at the @southdallasculturalcenter.

Crowning Glory feels a much different this time around.

The world is different. I’m different. And I wanted this body of work to reflect that.

I wanted it to reflect the deep joy and fulfillment that comes with going past the surface and embracing tension.

This time the film will feature the perspective of afro alchemist Mattie Calloway the founder of @curlycolormagic and @thedojo.society.

We talk about salon culture. We discuss hair as history and ritual and a tool of expression.

On September 10 at 6:30p at the @southdallasculturalcenter, you’ll see the film, hear spoken word and be in conversation with Mattie and @naturallyisis THE QUEEN HERSELF (who we filmed today!!)

🪮 link in bio to RSVP.

Special thank you:

I’ve always known there was magic in our hands and hair.

But to have the privilege to capture our gifts in real time? With my crazy talented friend @nitashiajohnson? In the salon with hair alchemist @curlycolormagic and the beautiful @tashigolean22 in the chair?

Only the stars could grant this type of alignment.

Crowning Glory: An Ode to Black Hair is coming to the @southdallasculturalcenter September 10. It’s a one day showcase that’s free and open to the public.

Crowning Glory has always been poetry and protest for me 🪧

I wrote Nappy-Headed Ho as a response to the infamous comments from uglyass Don Imus about the Rutgers women’s basketball team in which he referred to the players as jiggaboos and nappy-headed hos.

Mia Moody-Ramirez later wrote about the incident in a 2011 essay called “The Nappy-Headed Ho: A Fantasy Theme Analysis Of The Don Imus Scandal From A Black Feminist Approach”, where she perfectly sums up the Black woman’s experience at the intersection of gender and race:

“women of color do not experience sexism in addition to racism, but sexism in the context of racism. Therefore, they bear an altogether different burden from that of white women.”

When I wrote the poem, I was also inspired by Anna Horsford’s 1971 reading of High on the Hog by Julia Fields.

Together, these instances are a reminder that my demands as a Black woman must be loud, clear and direct.

I’m also reminded that white folks are forever intimidated by our beauty, sexuality and powerful presence.

That is why we must keep shining on these hos. taken in Dallas, Texas by @mycainthemaking

What most people don’t know is that I’ve never really enjoyed public speaking. I swear knots start dirty dancing in my stomach and sweat literally becomes my second skin 😅

But being a CEO and an artist who wants to change lives and impact communities often means I have to take the stage and step into the spotlight.

So this year, I challenged myself.

I decided I wanted to give voice to the poems that have lived in my journals and hung in my exhibits but have never actually been heard.

So when @alittlemoretruth invited me to read for @halperinpark Poets, I pulled together a set of 15 pieces spanning my last 6 years of writing and did the damn thing.

I’m so proud of myself for choosing temporary discomfort, for choosing to redefine my fear as fuel.

I know the ancestors are proud. taken in Dallas, Texas by @mycainthemaking

These visuals accompany Unprotective Style, a poem from the latest expansion from my multimedia project Crowning Glory: An Ode to Black Hair.

The title is a nod to Malcolm X’s quote that the Black woman is the most unprotected person on this planet. It also pays homage to aunties, kitchen beauticians and all of the ways we pour into each other when no one else will.

Eventually, my goal is to record all of the poems with their corresponding visuals. But for now, I enjoy that powerful silence of these intimate moments that feel like us, like home.

400 Years Without a Comb

That’s the title of the book I’m holding in my hands. It’s the masterpiece written by barber Willie Lee Morrow and tells the story of Black hair from the motherland to the transatlantic slave trade.

From the most ornate hair tools to people like the Fuzzi Wuzzi tribe, opening this book reminded me why they never wanted us to read.

Once we know the magic or our origins, there’s simply nothing that can stop us.

Thank you to @dallasculture and @dallaspubliclibrary for allowing me to host Hairlooms: A Black Hair Archive for my community.

Together we spent time writing, creating, mixing and simply being in the precious presence of each other.

Shout out to every single person that pulled up and shared space with me.

one week ago, we opened the doors to Afrodressing. 🪮🇯🇵🪮

and a room full of people came curious, dressed, stayed awhile + helped us turn an idea into something real.

a week later, we’re still finding pieces of the night we didn’t see while we were inside of it.

the conversations. the clothes. the Afros. the matcha. the sound. the people who stayed upstairs. the people who met each other. the little things happening in the corners.

maybe that’s what an archive is. not the recap, but everything that keeps revealing itself after.

thank you, Dallas.

Tonight we’re bringing the community together to archive the beauty of our crowns at MLK @dallaspubliclibrary

This come and go event is free and open to all ages. We’ll have @thequelhynson leading our collage table, essential oil making with our special guest @enidbskincare and a film station for guests to share their hair stories. The library is also creating a small reading corner to enjoy books on Black hair and history.

It’s going to be a beautiful evening. Grab a friend and stop by. Link in bio to register. taken in Dallas, Texas by @mycainthemaking
