60 years ago, today, the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) was signed into federal law. Savannah’s history helps us understand the importance of this legislation.

These photographs document some of the historic buildings lost during the construction of I-16 in Savannah, which displaced residents and devastated a thriving Black neighborhood before these federal preservation protections existed.

One of the most important provisions of the NHPA is the Section 106 Review which requires federal agencies to evaluate the impact of their projects on properties listed in or eligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). As a part of the review process, they are also required to consult with the public, Tribal Nations, and state and local governments.

Today, Section 106 is facing unprecedented regulatory, legislative, and executive threats that began on July 24th when the Advisory Council for Historic Preservation (ACHP) voted to approve a comprehensive rewrite of Section 106.

A second wave of attacks on preservation came more recently when Congress introduced the Bipartisan American Affordability and Jobs Act, which proposes changes to federal environmental review and permitting processes, including provisions that will affect historic preservation review. This bill would codify the proposed changes made by the ACHP. It will remove state, local, and tribal voices from the review of federal projects, narrow what constitutes negative impacts on historic places, and allow agencies to internalize reviews.

The Senate bill is slated for a vote on November 9th. Please call your senators and tell them to oppose any legislation that weakens Section 106 and puts our historic places and communities at risk.

The answer to my most recent “can you fine it?” post - the #FlemishBond brick on the #ThomasClark and #MatthewLufburrow Houses was painted white at some point in the 20th century. The paint was subsequently removed (you can take paint Off of brick that wasn’t originally intended to have it). In 2020, I happened to snap a few photos during a short time they had the #shutters shut and you could still see the ghost marks from the previous paint job on the brick. I also posted about this in 2020 and included a photo from an older edition of Historic Savannah Foundation’s survey book showing the midmod paint job. This time I’m including the current (3rd) edition of @myhsf survey book showing the year of initial construction. #savannaharchitecture taken in Savannah, Georgia by @myhsf

The answer to “what brick pattern and which house is this?” - the #FrederickSelleck and #SarahAnnMorris House from 1822 is one the few buildings in Savannah built with #FlemishBond brick pattern. The last photo is from the @myhsf 1968 survey book. Frederick W Selleck II was born in Rome, NY in 1791 and died in Augusta, GA in 1839. The same year he completed his house, he also advertised in the newspaper that he was selling salted bacon, fabric, corn, flour, sugar, coffee, whiskey, and gin.
Frederick and Sarah had several children including a son named Frederick. Born a couple years after this house was built, the son died in 1853 after a decorated military career.

HSF’s annual Gala and largest fundraiser of the year brought together so many incredible people from our preservation community — community partners, members, donors, neighbors and friends.
You made the evening magical, and we are so grateful you were there.
And please help us thank and support our Preservation Partners, whose sponsorships and investment in historic preservation made this evening possible.
We are so grateful for this community — and for everyone who continues to show up for Savannah.

What do you call this brick pattern!? Bonus points if you can identify the building - the @myhsf plaque is a slight clue, but I’ve cropped it in a most annoying way so the date is obscured.
Answers tomorrow! #savannaharchitecture taken in Savannah, Georgia by @myhsf

HSF has been in Washington D.C. for a jam packed week of all things historic preservation.

We attended the National Preservation Summit and Advocacy Day with the National Trust for Historic Preservation. We also attended the Fall Convening and National Preservation Easement Summit hosted by the National Preservation Partners Network.

We spent the week advocating on a national level for historic preservation, making connections with preservationists across the United States, and brainstorming ideas with other easement holding institutions.

We of course also made time to see some of the amazing sites and architectural gems that D.C. has to offer.

We can’t wait to be back home in Savannah to share what we have learned and hit the ground running!

Thank you to the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the National Preservation Partners Network and to all the preservationists who came together this week!

Our latest Blight to Bright project is underway! With help from Dum Spiro Spero Management and Kelly Tree Services, we’ve cleared out the home, removed rotted flooring, cleaned up the yard, and addressed roof damage.

Now, we’re moving into the design phase as we work to modernize the home while preserving its historic character. 🏡

Stay tuned as we transform 909 Carter Street from Blight to Bright!

Thank you to everyone who came to my lecture and/or talk about mid-century modern Savannah hosted by @myhsf - Both events were sold out! I brought props to the lecture, but I forgot to pull the last one out of the bag!
One of these images is a snippet from the 1957 #yellowpages showing the architects in town during that snapshot in time. (Some of their kids even came to hear me speak…definitely didn’t make me nervous 🙀)
This isn’t the first time Historic Savannah Foundation has hosted a mid mod event, but the amount of community interest was neat to see.
