Stage MOTHERLOSS in the round and re-choreograph the show in a week?? Nah, that’s crazy…

If you would have told me for our weeklong @baryshnikovartscenter residency, I would write three new scenes AND add two new cast members before an industry reading, I would call you crazy. Somehow, we pulled it off.

Theater is magic, but working with @the.kara.mack and @lud.cabrito is just a miracle. Needless to say, I had an amazing artist residency in New York, and I’m excited about our recent developments. #newwork #newplaysprocess taken in Baryshnikov Arts Center by @mylangray

Who knew an artist residency would include surfing? Surf + dance + Moqueca Baiana + writing + scholarly community = my first @blacklikewater Artist Residency. Developing my Black Atlantic epic, MOTHERLOSS, in such good company was good for the heart and the soul.

Presenting my scholarly research on the Afro-Brazilian Congado ritual and the 9-year journey behind this play was perfect for MOTHERLOSS’ first artist residency. It was a full-circle moment for me. This is the playwright-scholar work I’ve dreamed of doing, and it feels so affirming during such times of uncertainty and grief. The power of community cannot be understated.

I’m excited about the developments I’ve made with @lud.cabrito and @the.kara.mack I can’t wait to share where we’re headed next. Big thanks to @blacklikewater @bsp.ucsd @muircollegeofficial and @ucsdtheatreanddance for making this possible. #peergynt #ringshout #newplay #epic #surf taken in La Jolla, California by @mylangray

My main takeaway from @alleytheatre’s all new festival is: wow we are still recovering from COVID. I felt this collective easing up, collective breath - look at us, making work, in the room and with audiences, connecting, dreaming, conjuring what theater can be.

🌙 And a real sense of intergenerational joy - audience members who had subscribed for 50 years (!), @sbutler_rogue and I holding down the gen x’ers, emerging actors and writers, young Houston theater artists in the house, recent MFA grads like @mylangray around too! And so grateful to the Alley for bringing @jennikkid down… to introduce Houston to her brilliance and allow us to deepen our ongoing collaboration and friendship. A sense of lineage and future forward: sankofa.

🍄‍🟫 Times are tough yes but community is happening, new work is happening and if we lean into each other … and these emergent timelines moving at the speed of trust, we will find our staying power.

Brazil finally made it into my play!! See the slave mines in Ouro Preto that informed my play, MOTHERLOSS. Does this count as research? Description of my play below. PART 1/2

.
.
When Dwayne meets his long-lost mother in a dream, he leaves behind everything he’s ever known to go find her. In a fantastical journey through space and time, MOTHERLOSS follows Dwayne as he retraces his mother’s steps from the Gold Coast, through the Middle Passage, to the New World. On the way, he meets strangers, tricksters, and unexpected guides who teach him how to traverse a history of loss and grief, and how to hold those closest to you near.

Do not miss MOTHERLOSS at the Sheila & Hughes Potiker Theatre May 5-16!

Written by Mylan Gray
Directed by @lud.cabrito

Y’all, they let me get away with another degree—well, almost. It’s hard to think that in two months, my time as an UCSD MFA playwriting student will come to a close. I just got here! It’s almost too emotional to put into words. Over these three years, this school has given me so much: from a newfound confidence in my writing skills to surf habits and new friends I’m blessed to know. Seeing my work fully produced each year with so many amazing actors while receiving world class mentorship has changed the way I see my writing and my career. I’m grateful I had the chance to celebrate this milestone with my loved ones earlier this month. Official graduation post coming soon. I can’t wait to share with everyone my Wagner MFA thesis play, MOTHERLOSS, on May 5th-16th. (Link in Bio)

Sundance 2025 was my absolute favorite. Third time was the charm. Saw some amazing premiers and that I will never forget, but my favorite part is, and will always be, getting to hear each artist talk about their work to an intimate crowd of open hearted viewers who have just seen it for the first time. Three films in particular really spoke to me.

“BLKNWS: Terms & Conditions” by Khalil Joseph lives rent free in my subconscious. Hearing Khalil speak about creating this film like a musician collaborates with others to make an album, made me dream bolder with my formal choices.

“André is an Idiot” showed me how to live authentically all the way through death. I never thought there could be a documentary that was a comedy about a man dying and it actually be funny. Every rule will be broken by someone.

“Ricky” proved that voice and character always matter first. I have always admired Stephan James work, but this one took the cake.

Sundance hit different rolling through with a group of my closest, sweetest friends. Already, I can’t wait for next year. Two years was way too long from my @goodsi.de family. taken in Sundance Film Festival by @mylangray
