Looking back over last weekend’s JAW New Play Festival with so much love in our hearts! 💕

Over 100 hours of rehearsal, 3 new full length plays, 1 new full length musical, 4 short plays from ambitious young writers, 5 Press Play events showcasing fantastic local performers and luminaries, and more than 750 audience members in attendance. From the first day meet and greet to the final public reading, we had an absolute blast. And then we took a nap.

See you next year, JAW!

What a gorgeous city Portland Oregon is, with a great theatre, and a lot of wonderful theatre folk! I can’t believe I never made it in Powell’s books, but I did see an Ocean Vuong book signing in full throng. Had a blast with my fellow playwrights, stage managers, designers, staff, all the amazing actors, directors, 3 amazing ASL interpreters, and 2 dramaturgs, delivering a play about a dramaturg, dementia, and queer elders. Thanks to all the folks who came: from undergrad with kid, grad school, a sibling, a bestie and consort 😁, a New Dramatist, a work friend who became a friend through listening to the plots of my plays and now crossed the country to see a reading, and Tom- my number one 💜‼️

"JAW is amazing!" and so is playwright Mylan Gray.

Mylan is developing the satire 809 ALMOND with us this week, and we can't wait to welcome in an audience to experience his biting take on a very contemporary issue. Join Mylan, Director Chip Miller, Dramaturg Kamilah Bush, and Actors Benjamin Tissell, Sammy Rat Rios, Rocco Weyer, Joellen Sweeney, Ashlee Radney, and Brandt Maina (RIOA wa ROE) for a free public reading on Saturday, July 25 at 4 PM!

We're also thrilled that Mylan will be leading a Community Artist Lab for JAW! If you're interested in learning more about wielding powerful humor that hurts and subverts, be sure to email education(at)pcs.org by the end of the day today to enter the participation lottery for The Butt That Bites Black: Subverting Race and Power Through Humor.

“Having the time to really lean in from a movement focus for this workshop has added to how we tell Dwayne’s story and how those logics can also inform our own cathartic experience with grief and relationship to our ancestors that were brought over to this new world with nothing—perhaps their bodies, or their songs, or sometimes even their drums—and created something new. And movement is how we tell that story.” —Mylan Gray, Spring 2026 Residency Artist

We’re looking forward to welcoming our Fall 2026 Residency Artists in a few months! Stay tuned for more information about our 2027 Residency application.

I love it when photographers are so in tune with the movement, they are able to emote the exact feeling in one still shot. Shout out to @photo_by_baranova for these amazing photos🙏🏽♥️♥️♥️🥹
