As COVID-19 further isolated the women incarcerated at the NC Correctional Institution for Women in Raleigh, they came together to crochet a quilt to share their stories with the outside world.

But as the piece gained popularity, they needed a more permanent home for their stories, so they created a new piece that honored the original idea while allowing it to move beyond their local area. Learn more about this special quilt's journey to becoming a permanent art piece. Watch the full story on YouTube (link in bio).

Visibly Speaking is produced in association with the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation. A group of people stands in front of a colorful, illuminated art display. The text reads: "This traveling art display spotlights the stories of women incarcerated in North Carolina" and "How a pandemic art project became a symbol of visibility." The "Visibly Speaking" logo is in the top right corner. by @mypbsnc

As war dragged on and inflation skyrocketed, ordinary women and laborers found themselves starving while wealthy merchants and speculators hoarded food for profit. Across the colonies, mobs took to the streets, raiding warehouses and forcing fair prices. Learn more on "The Unhinged Ladies Who Terrorized Greedy Merchants" from Rogue History.
