The more comfortable I became in my own company, the less willing I was to abandon myself just to have company.

The friendship fallouts that once broke my heart ended up teaching me one of the most important lessons: being alone is better than losing yourself trying to belong.

Spending intentional time alone has changed my mindset on how I approach friendships, protect my energy, and choose who gets access to me.

You realize that walking away isn’t always a loss. Sometimes, it’s self-preservation.

Brown girls, your sense of self gets stronger every time you choose yourself when it would be easier to choose everyone else.

As a brown, immigrant girl, I spent a lot of time learning how to be understood, liked, respectful, practical, successful, and “good.”

But nobody really teaches you how to know yourself.

And you don’t build self-trust by thinking about who you want to become. You build it by actually making the uncomfortable choices.

Every time you choose yourself, you collect evidence that you can trust yourself. And that’s how your sense of self gets stronger.

Not overnight.
Not by becoming less connected to your culture.
Not by becoming someone your family doesn’t recognize.

But by learning how to honour where you come from without abandoning who you’re becoming.

Sometimes the answer to a complicated life is a really simple day.

A day with nowhere to be. No agenda. No one to impress. Just you, your thoughts, and enough quiet to actually hear yourself again.

Welcome back to my series: You’re never by yourself, always WITH yourself.

I’m taking myself on solo dates to rebuild the relationship I have with myself... outside of expectations, external validation, and the habit of always putting myself second.

Today’s stop: @granville_island

The day looked like wandering Granville Island with no real plan. I ate good food, sat by the water, danced with myself in public, and journalled about reframing my inner dialogue and celebrating the things that make me, me.

No agenda. No destination.
Except more of me.

Because sometimes we get so lost in the lows, looking outside ourselves for reassurance, that we forget the person whose voice we need to hear most. Ours.

And maybe that’s the beauty of a simple day.

It doesn’t solve every problem.
It simplifies them.

Brown girls, I’m gonna let go of your hand so you can stop letting go of yourself.

It’s time to stop abandoning yourself & reframe your mindset.

Choosing yourself isn’t disrespectful.
Outgrowing expectations isn’t betrayal.
Wanting a different life doesn’t mean you’re ungrateful.
And being misunderstood doesn’t mean you’re wrong.

I spent a lot of time thinking I had to navigate my identity by making everyone else comfortable with who I was becoming.

Now I’m learning that maybe navigating your identity isn’t about choosing between where you come from and who you want to be.

Maybe it’s about learning how to hold both.

So if you’re a brown girl figuring out how to honor your roots, trust yourself, set boundaries, take up space, and become someone you weren’t necessarily taught to be… consider this your sign to stop asking for permission.

And if this felt a little too personal, send it to the brown girl who needs to hear it too.
