While in Milwaukee this week for his soloist debut, violinist Julian Rhee offered a masterclass to students from Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra.

An alumni of MYSO himself, Rhee has stated, "MYSO kindles and nurtures the most powerful core elements of music in each and every student and creates a space that builds perhaps the most important experience for any young musician: community.”

We greatly appreciate this time given from Rhee to aid these talented, young musicians in our community!

Did you know that part of how MYSO’s large ensembles prepare for concerts happens in sectional rehearsals?

Musicians break into smaller groups by section, such as second violins or cellos, or by instrument type, such as brass or woodwinds. Working with a professional coach who specializes in their instrument, musicians can spend focused time digging into their parts and getting extra support.

Sectionals are an opportunity to work on technique and musical details while getting practical solutions to challenging passages and answers to questions. And musicians get to know the players around them, strengthening the teamwork, communication, and collaboration that make an ensemble successful. All of that focused work comes together when musicians return to the larger group, helping create a stronger, more confident, and more connected ensemble.

We've missed rehearsals. We've missed you.

MYSO is proud to introduce the Anthony J. Petullo Leadership Fellows Program, giving Senior Symphony musicians the chance to build real leadership skills alongside MYSO staff and Milwaukee community leaders. Fellows will meet monthly to collaborate on organizational initiatives and work through cohort projects designed to develop skills that extend far beyond the podium.

This program is made possible through a $1.75 million endowment from Anthony Petullo, part of a $3.5 million gift supporting both MYSO and First Stage. As Petullo put it, “Legacy gifts like this transcend a single lifetime, creating an impact that continues long after.”

We're grateful for this investment in the next generation of young leaders.

New on the blog: Details about our work on the Violins of Hope-Wisconsin residency campaign.

Last summer, the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra brought 70 instruments to Wisconsin that were owned and played by Jewish musicians and others targeted by the Nazis. They asked us to build the campaign brand, messaging guide, ads, and website for the five-month residency.

Our first conversations weren't about design. They were about how to share these stories in a way that honors and respects the survivors and still inspires the community and young musicians of today.

The full story is on the blog, from the hero image built out of historical photographs to the brand and messaging guide that helped 65 partner organizations speak with one voice. It's one of the projects we're most honored to have been part of.
