40/40: Celebrate! The final one! There is always a reason to celebrate sometimes big, and many times small. Celebrate often and openly. Express your gratitude to life and the beings that are currently in it with you. If you can find one thing to celebrate everyday - especially on the hard days - you will find you are more resilient because you are always looking to bring light or BE light - even on the darkest days. Thank you to everyone for supporting this art as I celebrated the last days before a new decade in life. It has been a gift and a project I am so proud that I started and shared. And to think I was reluctant to start this, thinking maybe I couldn’t think of 40 bits of wisdom to pass forward and express creatively. It was humbling to realize I could have kept going well past 40. Our experiences, high and low, produce beautiful insights, and I am so happy I accepted the challenge to synthesize some of mine. 39/40: Our Perception. At any given moment, we are only taking in a small fraction of the information going on in the world around us. Then this information that our senses take in is subconsciously assessed based on our past experiences and classified. Only then do we react. Our perceptions are definitely valid, but they are not all that is. Be aware of the people in your life that discount your perception rather than communicate to understand it. Be aware of if you do the same. Many times grounded discussions about differing perspectives can enrich the way we view the world. Staying open to these conversations can help each of us grow - IF we are open to it. We have the ability to change our perceptions as well so they no longer have power to work against us. 38/40: Change There is the saying that everyone knows that the only thing consistent in life is change. We are constantly changing, our interests, our perspectives, what holds our attention, people in our lives, our priorities. It is easier to feel in control of the change we initiate. But what about the changes we didn’t ask for? That is when the struggle of control becomes apparent. I have been practicing the mindset of surrendering to these types of changes. And that is HARD. Surrendering and KNOWING that anything that comes my way - I am prepared for and it needs to happen. Taking it with an openness and awareness mindset , not a fearful and doomsday one. It proves to me more productive and more fruitful for my mental well-being. Fear of the new unknown is not carrying you. 37/40: Competition. I have always considered myself a competitive person - in fact, it is definitely a top character trait that people who know me would use. However, my definition of being competitive has changed tremendously over time. It used to mean winning - being the best. Which is a tremendous amount of stress. I wasn’t trying to be my best - my best was only acceptable if it was the best. I don’t know if this mindset is sustainable - at least for myself. Over time, I was burnt out, stressed out, and self destructive. Now, the only one I compare myself to is myself. I want to grow and get better in everything I do. But I don’t focus on how I stack up to everyone else. In fact - I want everyone to be their best and try their hardest. 36/40: Consume vs. Create What is your ratio of what you create vs. what you consume? There is so much technology and information at our fingertips, it is easy to find ourselves in a situation where we are spending much more time consuming than we are creating. This concept can extend across every aspect of our lives - and I believe keeping a balance is important. If we are constantly creating and never taking the time to recharge or consume, we will eventually burn ourselves out. 35/40: Parenting One of the hardest and most rewarding things i have experienced so far is being a parent. Through this experience you really start to see yourself in new facets as you see yourself in someone else - behaviors, patterns, physical expression. Sometimes things you see hit hard because they are things about yourself that you have grown through or have yet to address. Recognizing this and using compassion rather than shame is, what I have found, a critical tool in determining if we magnify something or contribute to manifesting a productive shift. And as much as our children can be a reflection of us, they are also going through us, with their own beautiful personalities and perspectives. 34/30: Travel. As I wander and travel I have fallen deeper in love with the world around me and in turn with myself. Breathing the air and eating food in places that are unfamiliar to my routine but ingrained into someone else’s and both of which are essential to sustain our life are deeply rich and beautiful experiences for me. There is amazing culture at every corner of the earth For those willing to let go of what they know and openly be present to learn and experience where they are. “Travel isn’t always pretty. 33/40: Communicating your needs. Just as important as you knowing what you want and need in life is the ability to clearly communicate that with others. I have caught myself being conditioned to be grateful for whatever came my way rather that communicating what I actually needed. It is OK and healthy to state what you need from someone else and allow them the opportunity to determine if that is something they can do or not. For example, if you start talking to someone about something you are struggling with and they start giving you advice when you were actually looking for a safe space to talk through it - that other person may now being looking to you to follow their sound advice - especially if you don’t communicate that isn’t what you need in that moment. For my 40th birthday, my family has gotten together everyday to FaceTime, and everyday I have opened a gift from one of them. My sister knew one of my expressions of love is through grand and thoughtful gestures. She saw me given this, but wanted to make sure I had an experience receiving it. 32/40: Communion with Nature. Taking the time to explore the natural world is such a regrounding practice. To slow down and listen to the sounds all around you. The leaves dancing in the wind, birds singing, the smell of earth, warmth of sun. All going on, all the time, all we need to do is slow down and quiet our mind in order to take notice. I recently went through an excercise to connect with nature in this way and I remembered the “tree hugger” term. I kind of laughed to myself because I wasn’t sure how often I had actually hugged a tree. So I decided to do so. It felt warm, somehow soft and strong. I got to the point where my mind told me to let it go, so I kept hugging it. The tree felt like it was holding me in a safe embrace. Before I knew it I was crying, for no particular reason, I just felt this overwhelming sense of support, the moss growing in the trunk of the tree soaked up my tears and was so soft on my face, like a blanket. 31/40: Taking Risks. I gravitate towards choosing growth over comfort/complacency. The way I see it, if you are following your heart, seeking to grow in areas you are passionate about, have or are starting to set goals, betting on yourself and taking a risk at stepping into the unknown is worth it. At the end of the day, you didn’t abandon yourself or your dreams, and you are guaranteed to learn, and be several steps down a path than you were before. All things to be proud of. And I am not encouraging chaotic risk based on impulse, urges, immediate satisfaction. Those, like goals, may be rooted in avoidance or moving away from something. I have found that I can never stay comfortable for long before continuing to seek opportunities to learn, grow, experience something new, be wildly uncomfortable/vulnerable. This art project is an example of that for me. Stepping into a medium that is completely new, letting my intuition make the piece, and sharing it - even if it’s not “perfect”. 30/40: The power of words. Be aware of the words you use towards yourself and others. They are some of the seeds we plant and will grow if nurtured. Words are just as damaging as physical attacks - and their impacts last. For anyone that has or is experiencing this - verbal abuse is real and you and your experience are valid. In my experience, physical abuse quickly turned verbal (you don’t have to make excuses about black eyes anymore). I remember when I first learned about the term gaslighting - and I was hesitant to even google it. Once I did, my entire body broke into a cold sweat as I started reading. The power of knowing is one of the pivotal moments that helped me to start to find help and healing. I am also finding that it takes time to heal these wounds. You will be fine, thinking you have cleared out all these weeds and another memory, word, feeling will bloom. 29/40: Being of Service. This is a culmination of all of the bits of wisdom shared so far in action. We want to be able to be of service to others (and ourselves) in a meaningful way. There are an infinite amount of ways that this can be done. I find that it is an important key to happiness. I sometimes picture life as this massive spiral and winding staircase. Everyone in different places on it. Most of us climbing forward...some going down...some stuck or resting...some passing through...some moving in parallel. I have found that the rate at which you fall is faster than the rate at which you climb. This is why service is so wonderful. We all don’t start at the bottom of the staircase. Our individual entry points are higher or lower than others. Through service, we can expedite the rate at which others can climb and help to slow how far others fall. We can create escalators for people coming up to use, build new stairs in places that were difficult for us to climb, cheer on and encourage others, offer and hand to someone who is stuck. We are all trying to move forward.
