I remember Lianshulu because it was here that I learnt to make a necklace from the water lillies of the Kwando river.

It was 1999, and the Angolan bush war was in its death-throes. Tourism occupancy for the region - the Caprivi Strip* - was at 1%.

A Namibian German named Ralph owned the lodge. Ralph kept his staff on, despite there being no work. That’s the other reason I remember Lianshulu Lodge - for its caring owner.

And now it’s owned by Na’ankuse, an organisation devoted to care of Namibia’s wildlife, landscape and community. So it’s still a place of caring.

And the elephants of course.
