Kanaan Nights 🌌🌵

Spending three nights under some of the darkest skies on earth is an unforgettable experience. Watching the Milky Way with the naked eye as it slowly drifts overhead throughout the night feels truly magical.

We all have that special place we escape to when life gets hectic, when we close our eyes & imagine a beach, a mountaintop, or a forest..

This is mine.

I remember Lianshulu because it was here that I learnt to make a necklace from the water lillies of the Kwando river.

It was 1999, and the Angolan bush war was in its death-throes. Tourism occupancy for the region - the Caprivi Strip* - was at 1%.

A Namibian German named Ralph owned the lodge. Ralph kept his staff on, despite there being no work. That’s the other reason I remember Lianshulu Lodge - for its caring owner.

And now it’s owned by Na’ankuse, an organisation devoted to care of Namibia’s wildlife, landscape and community. So it’s still a place of caring.

And the elephants of course.

Speak to me about designing safari itineraries far from the crowds, where spatial exclusivity is king.

Neuras, Namibia 🍷 One of the driest vineyards on Earth - and people have been coaxing water out of this ground since 1894. The name itself gives it away: Neuras means "place of abandoned water" in Khoekhoegowab, named for the springs that make any of this possible.

The farm passed through German colonial hands, then several Namibian families, before British couple Allan and Sylvia Walkden-Davies planted the first vines in 1998. Neuras bottled its first vintage in 2001, and by 2007–2008 it had earned international recognition as "the driest vineyard in the world." 🍇

Since 2012 it's run by @naankusecollection - so your wine tasting here is also funding wildlife conservation research in the same desert that nearly made growing it impossible.

Would you expect a working vineyard this deep in the Namib? 👇

The Kanaan Tree 🌌

This tree is one of many scattered across the stunning Kanaan Desert Retreat—135 square miles of vast emptiness, easily one of the darkest places on Earth.

I got down low to the ground, aiming upward at blue hour, and later that evening tracked the Milky Way using my @moveshootmove Nomad.

Shot using my @sonyalpha A7iii Astromodified by @spencerscamera & the awesome 14mm f1.8 GM from @lensesforhire

Hope you like it!

Some Namibian fun for Friday! 🇳🇦

I have many different foregrounds from Kanaan, but this tree kept catching my attention. This type of shot is what's known as a Focal Blend, meaning the foreground and sky were captured at two different focal lengths, but both were taken using @sonyalpha gear.

The Dragon Tree foreground is 14mm, and the sky is 50mm.

Hope you enjoy it & have a wonderful weekend! 😊✌
