3 + 4 September: Intro x Cultura Nova Double Bill 🎟️
Experience two compelling audiovisual performances exploring sound, control, and experimentation tonight at De Nieuwe Gallerij, Heerlen!

🏛️ Public Attention
Roman Tkachenko in collaboration with Goya van der Heyden and Anllel Maria
An audiovisual performance in the form of a hearing, built from cases where sound in public space became subject to restriction, dispute, and control. From a 2021 climate protest in Heerlen to Hildegard von Bingen’s letters, protest songs, and activist testimonies, this piece is an appeal for the place of sound within collective political expression.

Didianne Leusink
Structured around a metre-long tape loop featuring recordings of hand-blown glass plates. Through live manipulation and experimentation, a dynamic dialogue unfolds between control and chance, listening and action.

Could you notice how every sound has its own texture, movement, and location? How it builds a space for you in this way?

Two weekends ago, Dag van de Componist happened, curated by @intro_in_situ at @bankastudios , Maastricht. They stitched together a programme that allowed us to share something vulnerable; unstable experiments, listening practices, and rhythms still in the making; works that may never settle into a final composition.

The research I did with @massiftrophies ; relating to sound as an active force that plays with our attention, our fleeting sensations, our mood and our sense of time.

The dawn chorus, every bird occupying its own place. A roaming motorcycle carrying through the night. The frogs’ love songs before summer rain.

At the same time, I was unthreading something that often sits within dance itself; it so often asks the body to feel in particular ways, to become available to certain sensations, while the mind’s eye facilitates this by surveilling the body. The lingering Cartesian habit of separating mind from body still shapes how we, in western society, think, perceive, and relate.

This gathering was a welcome opportunity to mess with this. Constructing a non-extractive experience of sound: that sound builds an architecture around the listener, rather than the listener simply perceiving sound.

The worker smokes his cigarette at the end of the shift, their breath fogs into the cold winter air. It’s easy to imagine the places A. Dumont sonically describes. A bell rings. Something seems approaching? Inspired by his birthplace, the post-industrial city of Genk, A. Dumont seeks to translate his surroundings into sonic passages. During Intro Tuning In, he performed an industrial ambient set with a very cinematic quality. ⁠

Then Clarinde Wesselink will present *at the edge of connection*Here she explores how moving in and through the world creates the potential for individual and collective bodies to connect with one another.⁠

The programme concludes with an open jam session! So bring your instrument if you want to join. Any and all levels are welcome! ⁠

It was a privilege to document Jana Schell’s graduation recital. Seeing her vision come to life in this setting was a reminder of the power of interdisciplinary storytelling. Jana has a unique way of weaving different worlds together, and capturing that raw energy through the lens was an absolute inspiration.

For her performance during Intro Tuning In, Zoef creates atmospheric imprints that evokes the approach of a possible doom or destiny? By setting conditions, she allows sound to shift and reorganise itself, responding in real time to what emerges. The murmuring of a pulsing cave, or the soft breathing of an engine?⁠
⁠
Influenced by world-building and simulation logic, Zoef works with sound and is currently exploring a shift from fixed works to simple systems.⁠

Six years of dedication, captured in a single room. 🪈✨

A huge congratulations to Hannah on graduating from CvA! Six years of hard work culminated in this beautiful final bow on May 28th. It was an absolute honor to be behind the camera to document the incredible multitude of personalities she brings out of the recorder.

From early music legends like Van Eyck, Matteis, Pandolfi Mealli, and Hotteterre, to brilliant contemporary collaborations with @christian_johannes_ the beautiful poetry of @liberty.corbett and @duo_reimagined, this entire set was a masterclass. She absolutely blew us all away, and we are proud to have captured this milestone for the archives.

🎶 New Intro Live Archives with Ethan Blackburn & Phuc Nguyen⁠

For their performance during Intro Tuning In, composers Ethan Blackburn and Phuc Nguyen prepared a set of noisy, dreamy, ambient improvisations. Ethan plucks a piano while Phuc distorts and bends the signals; acoustic instruments intertwine with electronic manipulations.⁠

Intro Tuning In is a project by Intro with the aim to investigate how cultural institutions can effectively reach Generation Z.⁠
