What an incredible way to kick off RISE Futures!!

This week we officially launched our first workshop with 58 apprentices and early-career tradeswomen from across Australia.

Our cohort represents 10 different trade areas, from electrical, fabrication and cabinetmaking, to carpentry, mobile plant, mechanical fitting, roof plumbing and instrumentation. Even better, around 64% are based outside capital cities, bringing together tradeswomen from regional and metropolitan communities across the country.

For our first workshop, we introduced everyone to the RISE Futures community, met our 6 Workshop Facilitators who will be delivering various workshops to participants over the next 6 months and got everyone into their smaller groups for the first time.

The energy in our 'virtual room' was incredible! With 60+ people logging in from all over Australia, chatting, laughing and making connections
almost instantly.

For the RISE Team, it was such a good feeling after all the work that has gone into building this next phase of RISE Futures. And we’re only just getting started. 💜 👷‍♀️ 💜 by @naenrise

RISE Futures is a national pathway for women apprentices and early-career tradeswomen.

Through mentoring, workshops, networking and leadership opportunities, participants build skills, confidence and industry connections.

Apprentices begin RISE Futures as RISE Participants, before progressing to Mentors in Training, supporting a continued pathway for growth and development. Their skills can then be utilised as trained mentors, sharing lived experience to support future women entering the trades.

Are you a tradeswoman who has built your career in a male-dominated trade? Are you ready to help someone else build theirs?

We’re looking for qualified tradeswomen from anywhere in Australia to join our RISE Futures Program as mentors and workshop facilitators from October 2026.

Building on the Together We RISE community, RISE Futures supports women apprentices and early-career tradeswomen through mentoring, leadership development, industry connections and skills-building opportunities.

If you:
-Are qualified in a male-dominated trade
-Enjoy sharing your knowledge and experience
-Have strengths in facilitation, mentoring, coaching or participant engagement
-Are passionate about creating pathways for women in trades

We’d love to hear from you!

By becoming involved, you’ll help shape the future of our industry and be remunerated for sharing your skills and lived experience, while supporting women to develop the confidence, skills and networks needed to succeed.

Whether you’re based in a capital city, regional community or somewhere in between, there are opportunities to contribute and connect with women in trades across Australia.

Every story shared, lesson taught and connection made can make a lasting difference. 💜

Reach out to Sammy Bowden, National Manager – Building Women’s Careers, at sammy.bowden@naen.com.au to discuss opportunities to get involved.

What if the stories we've always been told are only part of the picture?

As part of the RISE Tradeswomen Summit, our apprentices and mentors had the privilege of joining @sheshapeshistory for their Badass Women of Canberra walking tour.

Together, we explored the stories of remarkable women who have shaped Australia's political, social and cultural landscape, while also deepening our understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, activism and the ongoing pursuit of equity.

For our apprentices, who are building careers in traditionally male dominated industries, the experience was a powerful reminder that progress has always been driven by people willing to challenge expectations and create opportunities for others.

It encouraged us to reflect not only on the women who came before us, but also on the legacy we're creating today. Every apprentice, mentor and leader has the opportunity to open doors, challenge barriers and help shape a more inclusive future.

A huge thank you to the team at She Shapes History for sharing these stories with such passion, insight and authenticity. It was an inspiring addition to the RISE Summit and a reminder that history isn't just something we inherit. It's something we continue to write.

Want to be part of what comes next? 💜

Nominations for the 2026–27 RISE Futures Program are now open for women apprentices.

GTOs can nominate until 31 August: naenrise.com.au

Apprentice Spotlight | Amy Shephard

Growing up on a farm, Amy Shephard discovered a love of working with her hands that eventually led her from a career as a chef into engineering fabrication.

Now a fourth year apprentice, Amy has travelled across New South Wales, worked on everything from structural upgrades to mine sites, and built a career she's incredibly proud of.

One thing she learnt along the way? Determination will take you far, but you don't have to do it alone.

From the support of her boss, to the friendships formed at the RISE Summit, to being part of the Country Women's Association since she was 12, Amy's story is a reminder that the people around us often help shape the careers we build.

Thank you, Amy, for sharing your journey and encouraging other women to back themselves, stay determined and embrace the communities that support them.

Where can your trade take you?

For apprentices and mentors at the Together We RISE Tradeswomen Summit, the answer was simple...

Almost anywhere.

Moderated by Hannah Legg, the panel featured three inspiring women who shared how their careers have taken them in very different but equally extraordinary directions.

🌏 Elina Ulrich opened the session by sharing how her electrical trade has become a pathway to sustainability and global learning. As the recipient of a 2025 Global Footprints Scholarship, she'll soon travel overseas to explore renewable energy solutions and bring new ideas back to Australia's clean energy future.

❄️ Jen Fitzpatrick then took everyone on a journey to Antarctica, sharing what it's like working as an electrician at Davis Station and the determination it took to turn an ambitious dream into reality. Her story was a powerful reminder that there are no limits to where a trade qualification can take you.

🛠️ Saf Flatters closed the panel by sharing how her trade skills led her to volunteer in Nepal following the devastating Gorkha earthquakes, helping rebuild community infrastructure while working alongside local people. Her story highlighted that a trade can create opportunities not only for career growth, but also to make a meaningful difference in communities around the world.

What made the session even more special was that Elina, Jen and Saf are all alumni of NAEN's Today's Skills, Tomorrow's Leaders program, returning to inspire the next generation of women beginning their own careers.

Throughout the discussion, apprentices and mentors alike were reminded that completing an apprenticeship isn't the finish line—it's the beginning. Whether your path leads to international scholarships, renewable energy, humanitarian work, leadership or places as extraordinary as Antarctica, your trade can open doors you may never have imagined.

A huge thank you to Hannah for moderating the conversation, and to Elina, Jen and for generously sharing your journeys. Your stories challenged assumptions, sparked big dreams and reminded everyone in the room that there is no single definition of success. taken in Canberra, Australian Capital Territory by @naenrise
