Karuizawa Prince Hotel Ski Resort, which is scheduled to open on Saturday, October 31st (the earliest opening date in Nagano Prefecture), has begun snowmaking on Saturday, October 3rd. By starting snowmaking in the fall, they aim for an early opening of the slopes this season as well.

Until tomorrow (Tuesday, October 6th), two snowmaking machines will be in operation. Then from Wednesday, October 7th, all eight snowmaking machines will be in operation 24 hours a day, with a plan to produce approximately 450 tons of snow per day. This will secure approximately 6,300 cubic meters of snow in the 28 days leading up to the opening.

We are just about to come into the wonderful and colorful fall season in Nagano. 🍁Nagano spans about 2,500 m of elevation, so here's some basics of the autumn leaf viewing season for Nagano.

The color moves down the mountain over roughly two months — late September at the top, late November in the valleys. This year the Kōshin forecast (Nagano/Yamanashi) runs slightly later than average: early October through late November. Add a few days to the usual timings.

LATE SEPT – MID OCT (1,800–2,600m)

Senjōjiki Cirque (Komagane) — classic alpine bowl, often the earliest in the prefecture
Tsugaike Nature Park (Otari) — boardwalks through wetland, Northern Alps behind
Shiga Kōgen — huge area, elevations peak over several weeks; easy gondola access
Norikura Kōgen / Tatamidaira — late Sept up top, working down through October

MID – LATE OCT (1,000–1,600m)

Kamikōchi — golden larch and Kappa Bridge under the Hotaka peaks. Closes 15 Nov
Tateshina / Shirakaba-ko + the Venus Line — best as a drive, with Kirigamine and Utsukushigahara
Okususobana Valley (Nagano City) — beech, oak and maple in a gorge; road can shut early
Karuizawa (Kumoba Pond, Shiraito Falls) — late Oct into early Nov

EARLY – LATE NOV (valleys and towns)

Momiji-ko / Minowa Dam — thousands of maples, evening illumination
Kōzenji (Komagane) and Seisuiji (Nagano City) — temple grounds, mid-late Nov
Kaikoen (Komoro) — castle ruins and maples, also illuminated
Matsumoto Castle, Narai-juku and the Kiso Valley, Tenryū Gorge — mid Nov

Tips: Kamikōchi and Senjōjiki get very busy at weekends, with long shuttle and ropeway queues — arrive before 8am or go midweek. Mountain roads start closing for winter from late October.

🐒♨️ Japan's famous "Snow Monkey Park" is putting a cap on visitors — and honestly, we get why.

Jigokudani Yaen-Koen in Nagano is the only place on Earth where you can watch wild macaques soak in natural hot springs, tucked into a valley 2,800 ft up. Magical, right? Well, tourism has exploded — up to 4,000 visitors a day — and some people have taken it too far, trying to touch, feed, and even bathe WITH the monkeys. 😳 Seriously? That's like bathing in a toilet.

Starting in August, the park is moving to an online ticket system with a daily cap of 2,000 visitors to cut down the chaos and protect the animals. 🙅‍♂️The Hakuba Valley All-Mountain Season Pass is strictly for use by the purchaser only.
Use by anyone other than the purchaser, including resale or lending, is strictly prohibited. The pass displays the purchaser’s photograph and name.

If use by a person other than the purchaser (unauthorized use) is confirmed,
the purchaser of the pass (the violator) will be required to pay a penalty equal to ten (10) times the purchase price of the pass to the HAKUBA VALLEY Promotionboard.
Furthermore, if unauthorized use is confirmed, regardless of the reason(including loss or theft), the season pass will be immediately invalidated and confiscated,and the violator will be prohibited from purchasing a season pass in the future.(This also applies to those who have committed unauthorized use in the past.)
In the event that your season pass is lost or stolen,please contact the Hakuba Valley Promotion Board immediately.
Please note that lift gates at each ski resort are equipped with automatic photo-capture systems to prevent and monitor unauthorized use🎥
In addition, if any violation of each ski resort’s terms and conditions is found,patrol staff or lift operators may request presentation of the pass,verify its validity, suspend its use, or require the user to leave the premises.
We have recently observed cases of resale on websites and other platforms.
Resale of season passes is strictly prohibited. Please do not engage in such activity🙅‍♂️

In January it was announced that Togakushi Shrine had closed off its famous cedar pathway leading to the main shrine.

Why? Two reasons. One was heavy snowfall making the path difficult. The other?
Increasingly bad behavior from inbound tourists.
