my persian-american identity is inked by the tattoos on my sleeves, embedded in my DNA, and expressed in my face with little pieces of every ancestor that came before me.

I met @golipar a few years ago by chance. Her passion as Persian bridal designer (@goli_june) truly struck me as a physical manifestation of what so many in our diaspora have had dreams of since the late 1970’s - freedom of true expression.

so, when @huhmeeed came to me with the proposition to help bring goli’s vision for her new bridal collection to life, I leapt at the opportunity to share in their creativity and endless talents.

symbolism in persian culture is incredibly important. the hardships of winter produce pomegranates, which symbolizes abundance, fertility, life, and the triumph of light over darkness. rugs are a handmade labor of love, with many intricate motifs like boteh (paisley) that showcase eternity and the history of zoroastrian cypress trees.

introducing Silk Rebellion, the bridal collection that reflects the enduring influence of our grandmothers, the spirit of strong women, and honors romance and resilience.

as if that wasn’t enough, a portion of the proceeds from this collection will be donated to @icirr_il, to continue to support those who have made so many sacrifices for the betterment of their families.

i hated yoga.

after my first class in 2018, i basically swore off ever doing yoga again because i was terrible at it. i was genuinely fighting for my life trying to get into every pose during what should’ve been called “heated vinyasa flow 45 in hades.”

i hated not being considered conventionally “good” at something the minute i tried it. i held myself to impossible standards that i would never extend to anyone else (because, frankly, they were literally insane).

as my frontal lobe developed (thank god) i realized that leaning into the unknown - and getting comfortable with the discomfort of not being good at something - is kind of the entire point of life. of truly living & trying new things.

through friendships, i eventually understood that in yoga, that really is the entire point. the more you put your mind in discomfort, the more you grow - emotionally, spiritually, physically, and in your practice.

so, 200 hours & many chaturanga dandasanas later - I’m officially a yoga teacher (but literally always a student first).

here’s to trying new things & many more woc yoga teachers to come 🫂😌💌🪷

editing this back, I couldn’t help but think that in some ways, things really might just happen for a reason (really tough thing for a type A person to admit).

I started my day a bit solemnly thinking of people that aren’t here with us anymore, and how I wish I could give them one more hug and crack a bad joke just to see them laugh again.

by the end of this day, all we had were smiles (& @guinness)
