New work! After many years behind the lens and light meter on live action films, series, docs, music videos and commercials I set off to explore virtual environments.

8 months ago I started at Electronic Arts as Senior Cinematography Lead for Marketing, and over the past few days my first big projects went live: the Madden ‘26 and College Football ‘26 reveal trailers.

Replete with some of my favourite tricks - wide lenses close ups, a bird’s eye (obvs), and long lens handoffs, I hope the tacticle, handmade approach brings realism to this digital space.

With software engineer extrordinaire Taylor Haase on the 1s and 0s we worked in tandem to streamline the software camera tool to work smoothly with the physical camera rigs I designed and built to shoot handheld cameras inside actively running video games.

All the shots in this trailer that are on the game field were shot handheld by me. Editor Ryan Smith's passion and knowledge of the subject matter, of camera language and of the art of editing was crucial to draw on to help me make sense of the video gam, the sport, and the structure of a trailer.

It's rewarding that folks who have spent decades on this franchise are so excited to see it presented in a new way.

The making of motion pictures is ever evolving, and I'm excited to explore and push the limits while still making images which are handmade, grounded and emotional. It's been amazing to be invited to help shape the tools to pull it off.

This is my new step towards the confluence of of art & technology I’ve always loved.

I can’t wait to see where this journey will lead me!

I always love seeing plan vs. execution - We’re so grateful to have worked with such talented people helping us transform the page to screen while staying true to a single vision. Our cinematographer, Naim Sutherland ( @naimsutherland ), who was incredible, as always, in helping us tease out the thoughts and images in our head into something that the rest of the world can see, feel and understand. And Sarah Keil ( @sarahtoons ) our talented storyboard artist who manifested these thoughts to life.

Hard to believe it’s been 5 years since I worked on this D&D show, Ready to Roll.

It was such an interesting challenge to make a show which would have potentially dozens of hours of runtime and featured six improv performers almost entirely seated.

My instinct in that situation is to aim for a large degree of variety. I also wanted to reflect the game world on the tabletop set by having lighting cues for different times of day, and interiors and exteriors.

The show was covered by six cameras: Two underslung on robotic Dana dollies, visible in the upper right and left of this image.

One bird’s eye, have you met me? But also it was important to cover the gameplay table.

Three 70-200mm operated by humans on an enormous custom curved Dana Dolly track, built by Aggressive Tube Bending in Surrey. Highly recommend them, they were great to work with and went above and beyond by transporting our track in sections (otherwise we’d have an oversized load), and also allowing me to sign off on the welds by running the 200mm over them a few times to make sure they were perfect.

The 3 camera operators are hidden behind ND gel mounted in the holes cut into the set. I wanted the smallest possible hole cut in the beautiful set, so @yandy_liu calculated the size based on the possibility of us wanting a 70mm shot of a 6’4” performer standing at the roughly 20’ subject to lens distance.

The show was recorded live to tape, and I also did a bunch of live technical directing as well.

I think it’s about a 26 light setup with preset settings for different times of day and gameplay conditions. All set up so that after the kinks were ironed out others could be trained on this extremely complex setup, turning it into a completely turnkey solution.

While this show came with a lot of unique challenges, I just kept grounded in my goals of wanting to have correct headroom, with good lighting in a nice composition - but I want that on the fly from 6 cameras while shooting unscripted content.

Oh wow, that last reel I posted was scary! What if you’re making a movie that isn’t so dark and fewer people die in it? Maybe it takes place sometime other than present day, some place other than our ordinary world. If that’s the case, I’m in!

I cut together a little reel of some of the more fantastical moments from past projects. Do people still make fantasy movies? I hope so! Enjoy!
