A grateful look back at our world premiere of The Painted Life of E.J. Hughes at #VIFF2025. I think one reason this post is so belated is that I really can’t find enough words to thank everyone who made this experience so big and special! I’m still processing. Thank you to everyone who came out to our THREE full house screenings plus the small “relaxed” screening - It was overwhelming and absolutely thrilling to have you all there. Thanks to everyone who shared such moving comments with me, through texts, emails, or with their shining faces after the screenings. Thank you to my wonderful family, some of whom made significant trips to be there. Thank you to the incredible, talented crew who made this film with me - and thank you especially to @kevineastwood for everything from throwing great screening parties to hauling the giant posters around and juggling and photographing and posting all the things! Thank you to all the participants of the film who came out to see it for the first time and to participate in Q&As. Thank you to Alan Franey, Curtis Woloschuk, PoChu AuYeung, and the whole VIFF team for programming us, hosting thoughtful Q&As and creating a spectacular cultural cornucopia of films, parties and artful experiences from start to finish. Every part of this festival was so beautifully produced. And a HUGE thank you to @knowledgenetwork for making this film possible. I was profoundly honoured to be presented alongside the other powerful Knowledge Originals documentaries, Clan of the Painted Lady and Treasure of the Rice Terraces, which I will post about next. Sending a giant glittering explosion of love confetti to you all! ✨💖✨

Deferrent Circles at Parade of Lost Souls 2024 It was a wet one, but the little souls were out in full force, and we were absolutely mobbed with kids for hours. Then, a bunch of friends surprised @brycetown by materializing in a flash mob, singing happy birthday, with sparklers in their hands!! I love you guys!! Thanks for the pictures, Coach! #paradeoflostsouls2024 #dustyflowerpotcabaret #artinstallation #interactiveart #Halloween #birthday #Vancouver #eastvan #troutlake

I always love seeing plan vs. execution - We’re so grateful to have worked with such talented people helping us transform the page to screen while staying true to a single vision. Our cinematographer, Naim Sutherland ( @naimsutherland ), who was incredible, as always, in helping us tease out the thoughts and images in our head into something that the rest of the world can see, feel and understand. And Sarah Keil ( @sarahtoons ) our talented storyboard artist who manifested these thoughts to life. Hire them both. Mary’s heritage minute could not have been without the talent and commitment of Louisa Birkin (@louisabirkin ), Naim Sutherland (@naimsutherland ) and Nicole Swan ( @gofornicolecostumes ) who brought Mary’s visual world to life! The research and the attention to detail on this minute was impeccable drawing inspiration from Mary’s original paintings and painstakingly recreating them in the real world. The colors, the set design, the costume, the framing, the emotion - all deeply drawn from Mary’s own work. Watch our new #HeritageMinute on Mary Riter Hamilton, who painted the battlefields after the First World War as a testament to its devastating cost. She would suffer mental and physical illnesses as a result of documenting the experiences of Canadian soldiers. Born in 1867 in Teeswater, Ontario, Hamilton made her living as an artist after the death of her husband. When the First World War broke out, she tried in vain to join the men painting the battlefields. After the armistice was signed, the Amputation Club of British Columbia (now the War Amps), commissioned Hamilton to document the aftermath of the war. At the age of fifty-two, Hamilton set out for Europe. She would paint some 350 works in three years, the largest collection of First World War paintings by a single artist in Canada. She persevered for those who had fought, often painting in poor working conditions which caused her to suffer physically and mentally. She donated most of her works and died in 1954, in poverty and relative obscurity. This Heritage Minute was made possible thanks to funding from Canadian Heritage, with in-kind support from Sunbelt Rentals Film & TV (formerly William F Whites). A massive thank-you to producers Hayley Gray and Elad Tzadok (Scopitone Films), Raynor Shimabukuro, as well as our script consultants and cast and crew!
