We heard this before. *I* said it before! 😩 (wish I can wash my mouth off those words!!!)
.
But I have understand more and I am taking back those words! Children do not manipulate and they do not have the intention to be manipulative.
.
Children learn from their surroundings. They learn a-lot from the adults in their life (like us too!).
.
Also like us, children learn to adapt to the different situation they face everyday.
.
✨Reflection: in certain situation, our brain would immediately get into gear and we automatically act certain way (like its who we are). We know that if we do things certain way or express ourselves that way, we’d get what we want. We consciously do it. And that’s being manipulative (in adults ya!)
.
But children, they don’t have that capacity. What happened most of the time is, they act how they feel and *WE* feel we have to obliged and follow hence making us feel manipulated. And children sees that and they learned that from their adults and surrounding.
.
✨Important: Children always show how they feel. Every behaviour is them communicating to us. It is up to us now to understand them.
.
Children ARE NOT manipulative. And WE have the control to MANAGE our emotions and reaction in ALL the situation we face with the children.
.
✨ Ponder: How do we ACT and REACT around children? What is it they are LEARNING from watching us?

BERMAIN bukanlah sekadar cakap-cakap sahaja. Ini adalah kajian yang berasas.
.
Kajian terkini lebih banyak melihat kepada aspek scientific BERMAIN dan bagaimana BERMAIN membentuk dan membantu PERKEMBANGAN MINDA kanak-kanak.

Bila anak-anak TIDAK dibenarkan bermain dan hanua disuruh DUDUK diam dan “belajar”, ITU SUDAH lari dari fitrah mereka.

Dunia awal kanak-kanak ni, kita perlu jaga. Inilah permulaan kepada baaaaanyak perkara, lagi-lagi dalam perkembangan minda serta pembinaan sahsiah dan jati diri mereka.

Jadi, penting untuk kita fikirkan bagaimana pembelajaran itu kita (sebagai orang dewasa yg diamanahkan menjaga mereka) bina untuk mereka.

Sometimes, Read Aloud looks like this.

A book in my hands.
Children gathered around.
Some sitting close. Some a little further away.
Someone answering before I’ve finished the question.
Someone noticing the tiniest thing in the picture.
Someone listening quietly while their hands are busy with something else.

And somewhere between the pages, we talk.

We wonder.
We predict.
We laugh.
We disagree.
We connect the story to something that happened yesterday.

I think sometimes we make reading with children more complicated than it needs to be.

Read Aloud doesn’t have to look like a perfectly quiet group of children sitting cross-legged, eyes forward, hands on laps.

Listening can look different on different children.

The goal isn’t to train children to look like they are listening.

It is to give them stories worth listening to and an adult who is willing to experience those stories with them.

Because before we ask children to become readers, perhaps we can first help them become people who love what happens when a book opens. by @nams.mh

STORY MAKERS! — DAY 1 (1st Sep 2026)
PlayHoliday Pogramme at KinderKaizen® Bukit Jelutong

What does happy look like to you?
Yellow? Blue? A big smile? A scribble? A whole page of colour?

On our first day of Story Makers!, we read In My Heart: A Book of Feelings by Jo Witek and opened up conversations about the many feelings we carry; happy, sad, angry, calm, brave and everything in between.

Then, we invited the children to show us:
“What does this feeling look like to YOU?”
There were no assigned colours.
No picture to copy.
No one “correct” Emotion Wheel to bring home.
Because even when two children say “I’m happy,” what happiness looks and feels like to each of them can be completely different.
And somewhere between the colours, drawings and little stories they shared, we got to know them a little better too.

A little note about Read Aloud…
Read Aloud doesn’t always have to look like:
Everyone sitting up straight. Hands on laps. Eyes on the teacher.
Some children sit close.
Some lie on their tummy.
Some shift positions.
Some need something small to do with their hands while they listen.

Listening doesn’t always have one look.
Of course, we still guide children when their movement begins to distract others or themselves. But when a child is comfortable, engaged and still following the story, we don’t need to correct their body simply because it doesn’t look like listening.

Sometimes you know they were listening when you turn the page and suddenly hear:
“Wait! Why did she do that?” 😆

A book on the shelf.
A picture that catches your eye.
A question.
A silly idea.
A “What if…?” 💭

Sometimes, that’s all it takes for a story to begin.

For the next four days, books will live all around our Story Makers! space; not only for “Story Time”, but for children to pick up, flip through, revisit, wonder about and ask us to read together.

Because we want reading to feel like something children can reach for; not only something adults tell them it’s time to do.

Every feeling is welcome here. ❤️

At Story Makers!, stories give us a way to talk about the things happening inside us; happiness, sadness, worry, frustration, excitement and everything in between.

We’ll read, talk, wonder and create as children begin to recognise that all feelings can be felt and what we do with those feelings matters.

Our space is ready. The storybooks are waiting.
