What a week. Still not over it.

What started as a little after school drama club for my kids & their friends has now become a hugely impactful social enterprise, affecting many hundreds of families every single year.

I’ve worked hard. Still working hard. Working in the arts, as rewarding as my work can be, is TOUGH. You’re constantly justifying not just yourself, but the value of what you do. You’re turning up to sessions with sometimes no-one there, having written a personalised script for those you expected to work with, you’re up until all hours of the morning painting a set in a village hall because you can’t afford a set designer, you’re spending months setting up projects and partnerships for funded projects, then applying for the funding and getting turned down with no explanation. Constantly worrying about how to get through the next year, and the next, and the next.

But for all the slog, there are invaluable rewards. Seeing kids you taught from a young age grow up to be confident, successful, kind humans and attributing their success to the grounding your classes gave. Hearing non verbal kids express words for the first time. Seeing a child make their first true friend. A teenager comes up to you as she’s about to leave for uni, to tell you that your classes were the only place she ever felt fully safe to be herself. Watching young carers get a break from responsibility to just giggle with their friends. Working with a team of people I got to choose to work with, who are kind, compassionate and talented as hell. Doing something you know MATTERS.

So to be recognised by the National Lottery as a ‘UK Theatre Hero’ for my work in the community over the last 18 years means more than anyone can ever know.

And to see my students up on the stage at the AO Arena with the cast of Annie… good God I cannot describe how that felt. Just… wow.

I think I’ve always done what I do to make the little girl in me proud. And she definitely is.

But there’s no rest for the wicked… having just got turned down for funding yet again, it’s time to pick myself back up from the blow and find another way.

Let’s GO!

Just over 4 weeks until I’m 50 and I’m on a different journey than I’ve experienced before.

This chapter is about being the best me I can be, for me.

And yes, in turn, that leads to being the best me I can be for those around me. But it starts with me.

I have a long history of people-pleasing (I think it’s something you don’t ever completely lose!) and along with that can come the need for external validation. It’s that little girl inside still asking “Am I doing okay yet? Am I good enough?”. And if we’re not careful, that can really drive the show. We can be what we think other people want us to be.

But I want to do the choosing.

I’m proud of how I turned my health around this last 6/7 years, but I’m even prouder of taking the reins of who I’m becoming as a person. And that’s taken some deep looking at myself, the decisions I’ve made and taking ownership of what I do with my life experiences and decisions so far, good and bad. It’s taken a lot of guts and raw honesty with myself and some facking hard, painful work to redirect myself towards a path I WANT to be on. And I think it’s a journey that’s going to be lifelong.

I like who I am now. I have love for myself. I respect myself. I’m on my own side.

And there’s a hell of a lot of work to do still. It doesn’t stop. And some days being on your own side is TOUGH. It’s easier to berate yourself, feel like the world is against you, default to looking outside of yourself for the answers.

But the answers are only ever within. We all have the agency to decide what our next step is.

I love my life. And I’m looking forward to turning 50 knowing that I love who I am. Flaws and all. And that I get to decide what the next 50 look like.

❤️
