A photo the iPhone decided to feature.
Hard to believe it’s already been two years.
Next year—or the year after at the latest—I’ll make it happen: documenting taimen spawning in the wild.

You travel all the way to Japan.

Not for the cities.
Not for the tourist attractions.

But for moments like this.

A hidden mountain stream.
A wild Amemasu.
And the thrill of Japanese stream fishing.

Welcome to Japan, Sebastien:)🇯🇵

Back from a team fishing trip to Japan, organised by my friend @hugo.gallinaro.fishing .

So much to share about these fishing adventures and the endemic species we encountered. I’ll be telling their stories along the way.

First up, Japan’s local trout: the Kunja / Kundja, also known as the White-spotted Char.

A migratory fish and a fantastic opponent, incredibly aggressive and with behaviour quite different from that of trout. We were able to target them in very small rivers, heavily overgrown with branches and vegetation.

I had the chance to catch around 50 of them in just two days, with some reaching over 60 cm.

Hokkaido is a true natural wonder, where you can come across deer and even bears right in the middle of the wilderness. Thanks @canta178 for the moment together

This could’ve been the one that got away…

Mathis hooked an Ito in the lower Sarufutsu River at sunset.
Kanta missed the landing, and the fish went flying into the air.

Somehow… we still landed it.

One of those moments we’ll never forget.

I wanna Iwana:)

Sebastien, who absolutely loves char, with a Ezo Iwana (Amemasu) he caught.
The beautiful white piping on this 50+ cm char is truly stunning🐟

HOKKAIDO TAIMEN ♂male

Even after spawning, he didn’t leave.
50 meters upstream, the female is covering the Redd.
Down here, at the bend in the river, he waits in silence.
Just waiting for the next chance.
Maximizing reproductive opportunity.
In nature, we call that instinct.
But watching him work this relentlessly —
I can’t help but respect it.
Spring 2026, Hokkaido.

The satellite strategy observed in subdominant males is a covert behavioral tactic — one of lurking for reproductive opportunities within a dominant male’s territory while avoiding direct confrontation.
Now, what about the human world?
The knights who suddenly agree with a female’s every opinion, performing the role of the “nice guy.”
A subordinate chimpanzee, they say, will pretend to be fascinated by his own fingernails so as not to betray his interest in a female.
Playing indifferent — deflecting aggression from both sexes alike.
Perhaps the so-called sincere man is, in truth, nothing more than a covert and weakly-positioned male.
Whether human or Huchen, the strategy turns out to be surprisingly unchanged.

“イトウ” (the fish) is rendered as “Huchen” (Parahucho perryi), its scientific common name — let me know if you’d prefer “Sakhalin taimen” or simply the Japanese romanization Itou.
