The final weeks of NARDIV in Bucharest brought together many of the questions that have shaped the project over the past three years.

From the exhibition Roma belong here and its public talks to the NARDIV Summer School 2026, these weeks created spaces for exchange on cultural diplomacy, representation, identity, participation and European narrative diversity.

A major part of this was made possible through our close collaboration with the Goethe-Institut Bucharest — an outstanding partner in hosting, supporting and shaping this final programme.

On 25 August, the finissage of Roma belong here marked the final public event of NARDIV. It was a moment to look back at the encounters, discussions and collaborations of the past weeks — and at the questions that will continue beyond the project itself.

And this is where our channels now turn next.

In the coming weeks, we will put NARDIV’s results at the centre: research findings, publications, policy recommendations, educational resources and further materials developed throughout the project.

We will also continue to share related events and initiatives, with the aim of keeping the NARDIV channels active as a resource for cultural diplomacy, cultural exchange and European narrative diversity.

what are we not hearing❔

_sound yoga & sound walk on sonic absence and exclusion

__a 90-minute guided sound walk I designed and led around @goethe_institut_bucuresti for @nardiv_project summer school.

the walk draws on Mark Peter Wright’s critical listening practice, which asks

>what are we not hearing?

>what constructions and erasures haunt the act of listening?

i used that question to turn the city into a space of inquiry.
we began with an ear warm-up drawn from Hildegard Westerkamp's practice: a listening exercise that gradually widens attention to soundscape, recalibrating the ear as an instrument, before we ask it to do more work (..it never stops, even while we rest).

from there, i invited participants into active listening, reading each space through what is absent, or erased right now.

> how is change recorded and adapted to?

> what frequencies are we not hearing within the contact zones of the city?

the sound yoga and sound walk exercises centered on representation and the right to personal sonic narratives.

> who gets to be heard, and who gets to tell the story of how they sound.

thank you for the invitation 💚 @mororistaz taken in Bucharest, Romania by @nardiv_project

Today at 18:00: NARDIV TALKS – Roma history belongs here

Join us this evening at the Goethe Pavilion Bucharest for a panel with Roma activists, artists and educators whose portraits and interviews are featured in the NARDIV exhibition “Roma history belongs here.”

📅 Today, Wednesday, 24 June
🕕 18:00
📍 Goethe Pavilion Bucharest, Calea Dorobanți 32

The discussion asks how culture and education can empower the Roma community in Romania — a community that has faced centuries of marginalisation and structural discrimination.

Going beyond a traditional panel format, the event is conceived as a space to identify concrete recommendations for European cultural and educational policies. Drawing on lived experience and professional expertise, the speakers will reflect on how artistic practices, education and civic engagement can contribute to sustainable empowerment, self-representation and social inclusion.

Speakers:
Alexandru Fifea, actor, playwright and cultural producer
Bogdan Burdușel, Roma rights activist and political communication specialist
Crina Marina Mureșanu, social worker and researcher
Elena Radu, Romani language teacher
Marian Enache, artist and Roma queer activist
Raj-Alexandru Udrea, artist, performer and activist

The talk is part of the NARDIV Summer School 2026 – Untold Stories and will be held in English.

Registration via the Facebook link in the comments.

As part of the NARDIV Summer School at the Goethe-Institut Bucharest, we had the pleasure of attending an inspiring discussion with writer and translator Jan Koneffke and Joachim Umlauf. Together with students from Germany, France, and Romania, they explored questions of minorities, migration, and Romania’s rich cultural diversity.

The Danube as a space of exchange, Romania as a multicultural society, and the visible and invisible traces of minority histories were at the heart of the discussion. Through examples such as the Lipovans, Jean Bart’s *Europolis*, and the poetry of Nichita Danilov, participants reflected on the close connections between cultural diversity and European memory.

The following day of our Summer School focused on Roma history, language, and identity. Sociologist and PhD researcher Adrian Furtuna offered powerful insights into the history of Roma enslavement in Romania, emphasizing the importance of research, education, and public recognition of this long-neglected past. In the afternoon, Mihaela Zatreanu, Executive Director of ERIAC and one of the world's leading specialists in the Romani language, highlighted the role of language as a source of belonging, resilience, and cultural continuity, inviting participants to reflect on their own identities through the “identity flower” exercise.

A heartfelt thank you to Jan Koneffke, Joachim Umlauf, Adrian Furtuna, and Mihaela Zatreanu for these inspiring encounters, and to our students for their thoughtful engagement and lively discussions. ✨

On 20 June, the Goethe-Institut Bucharest welcomed the opening of the vernissage I istoria e romenqi ʒal kathe  / Roma history belongs here / Istoria romilor se potrivește aici a compelling exhibition that brings to light the often-overlooked histories, experiences, and cultural contributions of Roma communities.

The exhibition was inaugurated with emotional speeches by Alina Șerban, Joachim Umlauf, Luiza Medeleanu, Delia Popa, Mădălina Pepenica, Marian Enache, Crina Marina Mureșanu, Alex Fifea, Elena Radu, Norica Costache and Gilbert Costache, and was followed by a moving performance by the Orchestra de Fete Matias. The interviewed activists were Alexandru Fifea, Bogdan Burdușel, Crina Marina Mureșanu, Elena Radu, Marian Enache, Raj-Alexandru Udrea, followed by the artistic intervention of Denis Nanciu.

Through photographs, personal testimonies, and interviews, vernissage I istoria e romenqi ʒal kathe  / Roma history belongs here / Istoria romilor se potrivește aici presents Roma history not as a neglected chapter of the past, but as a living and evolving part of Europe's collective memory.

The vernissage addressed pressing issues such as visibility, representation, anti-Roma discrimination, and the importance of creating spaces in which marginalized voices can be heard and acknowledged. Daniel Loagăr was in charge for the exhibiton furniture.

A particularly powerful section is dedicated to Alina Șerban, highlighting the transformative potential of art as a means of reclaiming agency, challenging stereotypes, and fostering dialogue.

Developed by the Goethe-Institut Bucharest within the EU-funded NARDIV project (United in Narrative Diversity), the exhibition demonstrates how cultural institutions can contribute to more inclusive and meaningful forms of cultural remembrance. by @nardiv_project

Today at 18:00: NARDIV TALK – The Hidden World of Different Peoples

Join us this evening at the Goethe Pavilion Bucharest for a talk with writer Jan Koneffke on two lesser-known cultural worlds shaped by coexistence, migration, and the search for refuge along the Danube.

📅 Today, Monday, 22 June
🕕 18:00
📍 Goethe Pavilion Bucharest, Calea Dorobanți 32

The talk begins in the Danube Delta, a sanctuary for persecuted Russian Old Believers in the 17th century. Drawing on Koneffke’s translations of poems by Nichita Danilov, it opens a view onto the spiritual, linguistic, and cultural layers that shaped this minority’s identity.

The second part turns to Sulina — once a vibrant multi-ethnic port and the seat of the European Danube Commission. Through Jean Bart’s novel Europolis, the talk reflects on Sulina as a microcosm of coexistence, negotiation, and cultural encounter.

The talk is part of the NARDIV Summer School 2026 – Untold Stories and will be held in German.

Registration via the Facebook link in the comments.

Funded by the European Union.

🎬 Gipsy Queen – screening & Q&A with Alina Șerban
Today, as part of the NARDIV Final Conference and in cooperation with the ICR Brussels and Goethe Institut, Gipsy Queen (2019) will be presented in an evening screening at Cinéma Vendôme, followed by a Q&A with lead actress Alina Șerban.
The event is part of the conference’s engagement strand, connecting research on narratives, perception and representation with lived experience, artistic practice and public dialogue.

Directed by Hüseyin Tabak, Gipsy Queen (2019) tells the story of Ali (Alina Șerban), a single mother from Romania and former boxer who tries to build a life for herself and her children in Hamburg. Facing economic precarity, exploitative work conditions and social exclusion, she returns to boxing as a way of fighting for her family, her dignity and the possibility of a more secure future.

Blending the intensity of a boxing drama with the urgency of social realism, Gipsy Queen explores migration, Roma identity and the struggle for dignity in contemporary Europe. Through Ali’s story, the film foregrounds resilience, self-determination and the fight against exclusion, prejudice and unequal opportunities.

💬 The Q&A with Alina Șerban will open a conversation on representation, artistic voice and the role of cinema in shaping public perception.
