A frustrating DNF at TDS yesterday. I felt a strain in my quad early in the race and tempered my effort on downhills, but it worsened throughout the day till it brought me to a hobble. A small fall during the night or tweak on challenging terrain? I couldn’t diagnose the problem till I found a swollen welt later that night: a small extra headlamp battery in my pocket that added just enough pressure to irritate the muscle over hours of running🤦‍♂️ What a fluke. It’s a humbling lesson that small things compound out in these mountains.

I spent yesterday evening wallowing, but now there’s work to do. The main show is @rachelraedrake’s quest around Mont Blanc! by @narrowgreenarrow

Heading back to Chamonix after a few years away.
Returning to TDS, a race I first did back in 2021!

What’s changed in 5 years? I signed up for TDS fresh off a runner up finish at Western States, a pivotal moment in my running career that opened up so much opportunity and possibility. But TDS rocked me as I eeked out a 10th place finish. There was a lot of work to be done to run a race like this successfully. To get ‘good’ at running in the mountains is long and arduous. Since then I’ve started and stopped my watch for thousands of training sessions. Hardened legs, more experience, a fresh resolve, and new possibilities.

We’ve been traveling a lot lately, and that introduces a steady degree of chaos in our lives. Gels and bottles usually lived somewhere at the bottom of a suitcase or strewn about our camper…but the @hydrapak FuelKit has changed that! There’s a solid adjustable scoop and funnel to keep everything neat and tidy, and the FuelPaks keep our drink mixes far more secure than any ziploc ever could. No, we haven’t morphed into highly organized people, but our running nutrition game is now DIALED!

I took on @scoutmountainultras 100 miler last weekend! I wanted to experiment with this one a little, so chose to go without a crew and relied on just aid stations and drop bags. Ran some miles with buds new and old, but eventually it got a little lonely out there! This was an investment in my problem solving skills and toughness to get the job done one way or another. I know where the edges of my experience and skill lie, and I want to push them further.

I love a race that’s full of spectacle, but I’ll always come back to a true community event to fill my cup and connect with why I started trail racing in the first place. These are the lifeblood of the sport. The care that Luke and Tanae have poured into this race is felt from first to last finisher, and from pre-race briefing to post-race festivities and all the miles in between.

I say I didn’t have crew at the race, but that’s not exactly true. Rachel took on a huge load caring for the kids, tackling a major board exam, then heading up to Pocatello and still making it to mile 50 to cheer before bedtime. ❤️

My favorites pieces of gear are the ones that I’ve had the longest, the ones that remind me of the all the good stories and moments that happened using them. @ospreypacks new Duro Pro is one of those favorites. I take it on nearly every run and each scuff and dirt stain adds to its character.

Is a running pack a piece of gear or a piece of apparel? If done right, I think it can be both! So comfortable it disappears and so tough it can take a beating as much as my legs do on the trails.

I have my tried and true routes, but lately I’ve committed to running miles on new-to-me trails at least once a week. It always brings fresh perspective and a jolt of inspiration. If you’re finding you’re training is getting stale, take a street you’ve never been down, do your classic loop in reverse, run at a different time of day, find a new stretch of trail.

I feel fortunate and grateful to join the @suunto team! When I first became interested in the outdoors, I picked up the classic Suunto A-10 compass. When I first dove into trail running, I picked up an Ambit 2 GPS watch. And now it’s the Vertical 2 that goes with me on every run.

For 90 years they’ve been supporting our adventures and I’m excited for many more to come. #adventurestartshere
