september slow-down:

some early monte steps
chamo camo šŸ¤ uintaflage
park weather
etc :)

oh, and coincidentally, ā€œseptember slow-downā€ is also a term which will be used to refer to brett hornig’s race at @bear100run this coming weekend

maybe i’ve been hanging around @ovrlnd.studio too much, or maybe i’m finally just realizing how fun videos can be… they’re like photos that move! really been enjoying making lots of home video memories lately with our monte boy <3

i usually feel like photographing these events the way i like to is maybe the best way to experience them, as a super fan of the sport of ultrarunning and its athletes and routes.

it seems like every time i’ve opened instagram in the past week-and-a-half, i’ve seen new things on my feed in one of two categories: incredible and artistic photography from the UTMB races, and people commentating on the growth of UTMB and associated presence of brands and influencers in chamonix.

this is my best attempt at the former with some select photos from my time shooting for @acg, presented as a chronological record in case anyone in the future would like a reference for planning what i would consider to be one of the best possible itineraries for watching some world-class racing in one of the most iconic places on earth. of course, not a necessarily complete or comprehensive itinerary, but a very full and fulfilling week, and i’d recommend any individual elements of this agenda to anyone looking to *feel* what UTMB is about (imho, fwiw — i’m not the authority on this)

even if this wasn’t my job, this is pretty much exactly how i would want to experience core UTMB racing and scenery, so maybe it can be helpful for a few others in the future :)

and for better or worse (you can decide), there were no brands activating or influencers influencing in any of these places — just raw grit, competition, and elements in the mountains and in the middle of the night.

i’m extremely grateful for every opportunity i get to feel this, let alone photograph it 🫠

(note: some parts of this itinerary do require a car, but much of it, and lots of other great options, are doable using public transportation infrastructure in the area)

utmb ā€˜26 for @acg • deeply proud of this one. and dang has it been rough turning back to my day job so far this week.

a few highlights:

@lgeeeeezy on the hunt and winning occ in a sprint finish was the sickest thing i’ve experienced in trail running.

sunrise/moonset in val ferret after a day of soaking rain was just what we needed to close out the week on a high note, and it produced maybe my favorite trail landscape image i’ve ever shot.

many many good miles shared with the crew made the sleep deprivation and car sickness all worth it. doing justice to this sport through photo and video is not easy but it is possible as a team. we did it right y’all.

2019 me wouldn’t believe what we got to do this week. I remember our first time visiting Chamonix for UTMB, looking around and saying to Tim, ā€œhow cool would it be to have a film project here?ā€ This was our third trip back for UTMB filming and the novelty isn’t wearing off.

Our filmmaking journey has been filled with a lot of lows, my loved ones can attest to that, but this week was one of the highs. We worked with athletes and producing teams we admire and respect. We spent time in some of our favorite mountains. We witnessed incredible performances, celebrated efforts to move the needle for access issues in our sport, and reunited with friends, film subjects and clients.
So here’s your reminder, if you need one, to hang on through the lows because a high is on the other side.
Huge shout out to Fanny, @matthewjamesporter @thehilaryann @morgane.brgeois and @emma_dlrme @heronhibou for supporting all the moving pieces of production this week!
