Where could student media take you? 🎬

For Steven Moffat it started at GUST. For Alice Levine, Jamie Morton and James Cooper it started at LSTV. Gurinder Chadha got her start with Nexus at UEA.

Since then, they’ve gone on to work on Sherlock, Doctor Who, Bend it Like Beckham, My Dad Wrote a Porno and so much more.

Your next big project could start with a student TV Station!! 📺 by @nasta_uk

Congratulations on your A-level results 🎓Now the real fun starts!

Whatever today’s results say, you’re heading to uni soon. And it goes quicker than you think. So here’s some advice you won’t hear enough: join student television.

Join a society. Try something new. Build your CV. Meet people. That’s the advice you’ve probably already heard about uni. But what if you could do all four at once, and make television while you’re at it?

“Student media has shaped so much of my university experience. From my role as Head of Sport and as Deputy Station Manager to now becoming a NaSTA Trustee member, I’m honoured to continue giving back to a community that has given me lifelong friendships, invaluable experiences, and opportunities I never imagined.” - Alfie Langford (NaSTA Non-Member Trustee)

Pick up a camera. Get behind a mixing desk. Present to camera. Direct a live show. Or just pitch an idea and see where it takes you. You don’t need to study Film or Media. You don’t even need to know what you want to do yet. You just need to show up.

It’s a society, a community, and a portfolio full of real work before you’ve even graduated. Ask anyone who’s done it. This is the stuff people remember from uni.

The idea of student television has evolved alongside the media industry. Long gone are the days of broadcasting on an internal university network, nowadays stations upload directly online, reaching audiences far beyond campus.

From artist interviews to live sports coverage to original short films, stations produce a variety of formats across multiple platforms, reflecting the very industry they’re preparing to enter.

But student television isn’t just about content and learning. It’s about community too. It’s a place for students to meet like-minded peers and find belonging that can be harder to find in their courses, building relationships and skills that often outlast their years at university.

Student TV gives you the chance to do things you might not get to do anywhere else at university. Build a portfolio before you graduate, while learning how to work under pressure and to deadlines, lead a team, manage a production, solve problems when things go wrong, commun by @nasta_uk

Huge shoutout to Shock TV for the finale of University House 🏡📺

Since September, the team have produced 15 live episodes of the magazine show, featuring over 30 different hosts and guests along the way 👏

To wrap up the series, they pulled together a special one-hour live finale, bringing back familiar faces and introducing original games inspired by Deal or No Deal and The Traitors 👀

With around 22 students involved in the production, it was a huge challenge to pull off, and one of the station’s strongest shows yet 🔥

A fantastic example of what can happen when a team commits to an idea and sticks with it all year. Great work, Shock TV 🫶
