ADOPT POPPY- In honor of National Black Dog Day, I want to reintroduce my Foster Poppy. He is available through @peachstaterescue. One of the reasons I don’t post him a lot is because I struggle with what to write about him. He is seriously such a good dog, and whoever adopts him will be lucky to share life with him. He checks a lot of boxes: potty trained ✅ Sleeps all night in his kennel ✅ Is easy on a leash ✅ Plays well with other dogs ✅ Has lived with a cat ✅ Good with kids (little older because he is medlarge)✅ Knows sit and shake ✅ Likes to snuggle and give kisses ✅
Truthfully none of that really tells you who he is though, yes he is a good boy but he is so much more. He goes into his kennel at night and sleeps all night in there with the door open…. When he wakes up he jumps into the bed to get you up because he can’t wait to start the day. He sits on the couch with his paws and head propped up on the side so he can watch you go about your chores or whatever it is you are doing. He is soooooooo soft it soothing just to pet him. He is chill like oddly chill for a 9 month old but every once in a while he gets this look in his eyes and I know the Velociraptor is coming out 🦖. He is plainly stated SPECIAL and I can’t wait for his person or people to meet him, because I know he can’t wait. He deserves to be the center of someone’s world or have a family all his own. 🚨🚨Biscuit, Bagel, & Toast have NO INTEREST and are scheduled for euthanasia at 7:30am🚨🚨

Biscuit is mama to Bagel and Toast and they are SCARED! They are somewhat feral and just don’t understand what is happening to them.

This family needs a rescue and FAST. These are not easy dogs. They are unsocialized, fearful and their fear turns into aggression. Biscuit and her babies are not bad dogs. They are dogs who have been left outside, neglected, ignored. They’ve never known love or human affection. Biscuit has had more litters of puppies than we can count.

We need to help this family rehabilitate and learn to trust. Our Polk AC staff has worked so hard to help these babies decompress and let down their guard.

This girl isn’t just adorable — she’s got brains, personality, and a whole lot of love to give!

At 5 years old and 47 pounds, this beautiful Husky is the total package! ❤️

🐾 Super smart and eager to learn
🎾 Loves playing fetch — and even throws the ball back!
🦴 Treat motivated and ready to show off her skills

But here’s the heartbreaking part…

She’s one of the shelter’s longer residents. 💔

While other dogs have come and gone, she’s still waiting for someone to recognize just how special she is.

And with the shelter overcrowded, every kennel matters.

Temp Foster Needed - Nov. 1-6th - Looking for a Temp Foster for Poppy. I would imagine he would be an easy houseguest as he is an easy boy to foster. He sleeps in a crate all night, is potty trained, likes naps and snuggles, isn’t a barker, Is easy on a leash. Just an overall chill pup. All of these dogs MUST have a solution by end of day WEDNESDAY‼️

🩵Vin - hound mix. strong, smart. Squeaky toys are his love language. WE NEED A RESCUE - has an offer for two week board and train with rescue pull! WE ALSO NEED A FOSTER post board and train!
🩷Moxy - super friendly/kid friendly! Smart, loving, all around dog!
🩷Addy - collie mix. Very smart. Timid with some men and will need time and patience to come around.
🩵Flint - PUPPY - 6 month collie mix. the cutest thing! Super friendly and kid friendly!
🩷Buttercup - PUPPY - very scared in the shelter, just sits and shakes 💔
🩷Coco - PUPPY - very scared, but longs for human affection. Very submissive. Will be a wonderful dog once she decompresses.
🩵Shadow - 1-2 year old Rhodesian Ridgeback mix. He LIVES to play ball. He sits on command and is dog and kid friendly. Treat motivated!
🩵Rocko - SENIOR - abandoned by his owner. Highly treat motivated and sweet. Neutered. Has several growths that need to be seen by a vet.
🩷Hattie - less than 1 year old. Surrendered by her owner and very sad.
🩵Artie - only about 2 years old. very scared in the shelter, but sweet. Timid but gives little tail wags when petted.
🩷Creamcicle - 1-2 year old gorgeous lab mix. Happy go lucky, loving, submissive, and kid friendly! Good in a leash.

This is Shy.

Shy has only been at the shelter for a month and a half. He’s a sweetheart. Walk up to his kennel and he wiggles over, trying to give you kisses through the bars. He’s so scared that sometimes he pancakes in the hallway, too frightened to move. He’s gentle, soft, and incredibly easy to love.

That’s why he’s been on my radar. I fell in love with him the moment he moved into a window unit. He wasn’t showing signs of kennel stress. He was just… Shy.

So imagine my heartbreak when I walked past his kennel today and saw this.

Incessant, repetitive licking of the walls.

This isn’t a quirky behavior. It’s a sign of significant stress and chronic anxiety. Eventually, his chin and chest will become soaked in drool. His nose and snout will become red and irritated. Medication may help, but this is a dog telling us, as clearly as he knows how, that he is not okay.

I tapped on the window. He glanced at me, but kept licking. I stepped into the lane and he immediately wiggled over to give me kisses. I talked to him for a few moments, then stepped back into the hallway.

He went right back to licking.

This is the part of sheltering that people on the internet don’t see.

I appreciate every extension a shelter can give. But it’s easy to say a shelter should “just give them more time” when you don’t see what that time is doing to the dog.

You don’t see the dogs licking until they won’t eat. The dogs trembling in fear around the clock. The dogs becoming increasingly difficult to handle because their stress is spilling over into their behavior.

We see it.

I’m not saying shelters should never grant extensions. I’m saying this is complicated. There is no perfect, black-and-white answer when a dog is suffering in front of you.

Shy is only one year old and 49 pounds. I hope medication helps, but regardless, he needs OUT of the shelter environment.

You can blame shelters for euthanasia, if you want. You can blame them for not granting another extension or not “trying hard enough,” because those are easier realities.

But you know what’s really ‘killing’ these dogs?

It’s kennel stress.

Kennel stress kills.

I don’t know why Gardoon is still waiting, and it’s breaking me.

Gardoon has been at DeKalb County Animal Services since May. That’s 5 months of waiting, and I genuinely can’t understand why.

His pictures don’t do him justice. He looks more like a boxer than any dog I can remember seeing at the shelter. I really expected a boxer rescue to scoop him up, but I also know the harsh reality: rescues are busting at the seams, too.

You might wonder if there’s something “wrong” with Gardoon since he’s waited so long. But that’s what makes this even more confusing: he’s a GREAT dog.

Gardoon shows all the signs of being house trained. He walks beautifully on leash, turning around to check in with you throughout the walk. He has done well meeting children. He’s neutered, heartworm negative, and, drum roll please… DOG FRIENDLY!

Gardoon isn’t overly playful, but we’ve noticed that dogs who are hesitant to play or particular about their friends almost ALWAYS love him. He has a way of getting other dogs to open up and have fun.

He’s estimated to be around 4 years old, making him a great age for most households. He’s 51 pounds, would likely pass breed restrictions, and I can picture him being a chill, low-energy, goofy companion.

Gardoon can be a little aloof and independent, and he isn’t a super snuggly dog. But that aloofness is part of the boxer breed, and it’s something so many people love, especially when paired with their signature silliness.

At a shelter, though, people often want to feel “chosen.” They want a dog who immediately melts into their lap, rolls over for scratches, and showers them with affection. That just isn’t Gardoon’s style, and I wonder if it’s contributed to him being overlooked.

Adoptions are FREE today as the shelter works to lower its population.

🚨🚨3 NEAR PERFECT PUPS TO BE EUTHANIZED AT NOON MONDAY🚨🚨

Trevor, Farley, and Freddy have already gotten their extension and the shelter is full 💔 They are all slated to be euthanized at 12pm est Monday‼️

We CANNOT let this happen! Trevor and Farley are just babies and Freddy is under two years old.

Freddy is HW+. This is NOT contagious, but it does require treatment. He needs a foster for the duration of his hw treatment - a rescue will pay for it - not you. You just need to give him a place to chill and some love while he gets better!

Trevor and Farley are only 8 months old and terrified in the shelter. They should be growing up in homes and need someone who will remember they are puppies who need decompression, patience, and training. With these things they will blossom into wonderful dogs.

It’s on to the good life for these 4 chihuahuas from Rockdale County (3 of which are elderly)! They have rescue - but now they just have to get to SC - the first step to going HOME for good!

**Help Us Give Shelter Dogs a Chance at Life**

Our volunteer and advocate team is working with Polk County Animal Control to raise funds for one of their most urgent needs: **heartworm tests for shelter dogs.**

Polk County Animal Control is a small, underfunded municipal shelter that simply does not have the budget to test every dog for heartworm disease. In the South, where heartworm is extremely common, knowing a dog’s heartworm status is critical.

Many rescue organizations are hesitant to pull dogs from shelters if they don’t know whether the dog is heartworm positive. While heartworm disease is **completely treatable and is not contagious from dog to dog**, treatment can cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars. Without a test, rescues are forced to take on an unknown financial commitment, making it much harder for these dogs to find a safe place to go.

A simple heartworm test can make all the difference. It gives rescues the information they need to make informed decisions, helps dogs leave the shelter sooner, and ultimately saves lives.

Every dollar raised will go directly toward purchasing heartworm tests for the dogs at Polk County Animal Control. Your generosity will help remove one more barrier standing between these dogs and a loving home.
