🚨 URGENT FRIDAY 10/23 — JET NEEDS A FAMILY NOW! 🚨

Meet Jet! 🐾💙 This adorable little guy is pure puppy joy wrapped up in four paws!

Jet is full of puppy energy, loves his toys, and would happily spend every waking minute playing if he could! He absolutely CRAVES love and attention and wants nothing more than to be around people who will shower him with affection. Whether he’s chasing toys, bouncing around being silly, or soaking up some much-needed love, Jet is just HAPPY to be alive! 🥹

💔 But here’s the heartbreaking part… Jet is growing up in a shelter. Instead of learning about life in a loving home, playing with his own toys, and falling asleep next to his favorite humans, he’s spending his puppyhood behind kennel doors.

And somehow, despite it all, Jet is STILL the happiest little guy. His spirit hasn’t been broken. His tail hasn’t stopped wagging. He still believes his person is coming.

These three beautiful girls were found as strays, and at less than 5 months old, they’ve already experienced more uncertainty than any puppy should.

Each weighing approximately 35 pounds, these girls are just babies trying to make sense of a world that hasn’t been very kind to them. They’re scared, confused, and desperately need someone to show them LOVE, comfort, patience, and safety. ❤️

They should be spending their days playing with toys, getting belly rubs, and learning what it feels like to be loved — not sitting in a shelter wondering what happens next.

With week after week of urgent dogs, it’s so important for anyone on ‘the front lines’ to make sure they’re taking care of themselves.

Unless you’re really in it, it can be hard to imagine just how much work goes into saving dogs, whether they have a deadline or not.

You stop at the shelter to pick up food, and all the sudden you’re doing a meet and greet.

You check your phone on the way to the bathroom at 2AM, and you have 10+ new messages about dogs.

You finally sit down to watch your favorite show, and you get a phone call from someone who somehow got ahold of your number and wants to talk to you about dogs.

It’s easy to never take a break. It’s easy to never rest. It’s easy to never turn off the ‘shelter’ side of our brains. Because the work is important.

But rest is important too. Mental health is important. Time with family is important.

We can’t keep showing up for the dogs if we stop showing up for ourselves.

We can’t pour from empty cups.

So take some advice from Mars, and go take a nap.

Because you deserve it ❤️

URGENT: Can you foster Blake for a week or two?

Blake is a bit of a celebrity at DeKalb County Animal Services. He’s truly a GEM of a dog, and no one meets him without falling in love!

He’s easy, super dog-friendly, great with people, food-motivated, adorable, and extra chonky. 😂

And this morning, he had his eye removed.

Those of us who know Blake are THRILLED for him. His eye was causing him a lot of pain, and I’m so glad he can finally heal and get back to being his merry self, pain-free.

But the thought of him recovering in the shelter is heartbreaking. Imagine feeling groggy and uncomfortable after surgery, surrounded by loud noises and gross smells 24/7, with no cozy bed or quiet place to rest.

I truly believe Blake would be an INCREDIBLY easy foster. I spoke with the clinic, and his care is surprisingly minimal! He needs oral medications, an e-collar to protect the area, and some icing for the first couple of days. That’s it!

This is NOT a complicated medical situation or a complicated dog. Even fostering him for just a week or two, while his stitches begin to heal, would make SUCH a difference.

One important note: Even though he’s dog-friendly, he’ll need to be kept separate from resident animals while he recovers.

I cannot emphasize how much I want Blake to recover in a home. He deserves that comfort, and he would be SO easy to care for.

The world is a crazy place with a lot of things to be stressed about. It can feel overwhelming. But you know what could help? Or rather, who?

Legacy.

If you’ve had a long day at work and want to come home to unconditional love…Legacy is ready to greet you.

If the world is too overwhelming, and you’re feeling down…Legacy is down to snuggle.

If you’re feeling lonely and need some companionship…Legacy would love to spend time with you.

This isn’t a dog who needs a lot: a lot of exercise, a lot of attention, a lot of time. He just needs a lot of love.

It’s so easy for seniors to get overlooked, and that’s such a shame, because they are really easy, loving companions to bring home. They don’t need the same level of exercise and mental stimulation that younger dogs require. They just need love, and they have so much to give in return.

Legacy is a volunteer and staff favorite who is a playgroup STAR…all the dogs love him. He’s around 63 pounds and estimated to be 9 years old. He’s low energy and walks well on the leash. He’s heartworm positive, but heartworms are not contagious to other pets or people, and the shelter will provide treatment free of charge; he just needs a quiet environment to safely recover in.

If you need someone easy, please consider Legacy. He isn’t asking for much, and he has so much love to give.

I’ve been called a lot of things in those 2 years, but ‘puppy butcher’ is new.

Please don’t spread hate, to this commenter or any other. At the end of the day, regardless of whether or not we agree on euthanasia, humane shelter practices, how to fix the overpopulation crisis, or what makes a rescue ethical…that’s the nitty gritty.

What matters is that we agree animals deserve dignity.

That we agree the crisis we are experiencing is entirely man made, and the animals are the victims.

That we agree there are a lot of terrible people in the world.

That we agree every animal deserves a loving home.

There’s a lot to disagree about when you are passionate about animal welfare. But there’s so many more important things to focus on.

Let’s be kind to one another.

Alrighty! Round 2 of my favorite dogs at @dekalbanimals ! ❤️

Most of this month’s picks are older. With two younger dogs who need lots of exercise and mental stimulation, I’m starting to gravitate toward older pups who’d be easier to bring home. 😂 That said, two of these five are younger, so clearly I’m not THAT particular!

BLITZEN: I fell in love with Blitzen after he moved into a window unit. LOOK AT HIM! I’m obsessed with his asymmetrical ears, and little lips getting stuck on his teefies all the time 😩 He also did great in his recent dog assessment, showing off a gentle play style. He’s 1-2 years old, 40 pounds, neutered, and heartworm negative. THE EARS!

BLAKE: JUST A GOOD BOY. Around 1.5 years old and 78 pounds, Blake is affectionate, wonderful with people, and dog-friendly. The shelter is investigating glaucoma and providing treatment. This big ol’ chonk deserves love!

PAVLOVA: Watching Pavlova grow in playgroup has been so rewarding. After weeks of positive socialization, she no longer needed her muzzle and became a STAR, though she’s starting to experience kennel stress 💔 She’s incredibly affectionate, and I think she would THRIVE with time to decompress in a home.

LEGACY: EASY BUTTON!!! This 9-year-old, 63-pound sweetheart walks BEAUTIFULLY on leash and is a playgroup STAR. The people love him, but also somehow EVERY SINGLE DOG loves him too! He’s a joy to watch. He’s heartworm positive, but it’s NOT contagious, and the shelter provides treatment. Give this senior a home!

DARNELL: My newest favorite! HIS TROT. This 10-year-old, 51-pound boy trots EVERYWHERE, floppy ears bouncing along. It’s truly the cutest. He’s happy, dog-friendly, and contagious in his joy. Everyone needs to experience the Darnell trot!

These five are special to me for different reasons, and I’d LOVE to see them find their people. Reach out for more info or to meet them! ❤️

You came into my life twice, both times unexpectedly, and each time, you taught me so much. I am forever grateful to have had the privilege of being your foster mom.
You are so loving, so fiercely loyal, and so incredibly special. Thank you for trusting me, for allowing me into your world, and for letting me guide you as you learned how to love and trust again.
I could never have imagined a more perfect family for you. I am confident that you will never have to experience rejection or abandonment again. You will never have to wonder if you are wanted or loved. You are finally home.

🚨🚨Biscuit, Bagel, & Toast have NO INTEREST and are scheduled for euthanasia at 7:30am🚨🚨

Biscuit is mama to Bagel and Toast and they are SCARED! They are somewhat feral and just don’t understand what is happening to them.

This family needs a rescue and FAST. These are not easy dogs. They are unsocialized, fearful and their fear turns into aggression. Biscuit and her babies are not bad dogs. They are dogs who have been left outside, neglected, ignored. They’ve never known love or human affection. Biscuit has had more litters of puppies than we can count.

We need to help this family rehabilitate and learn to trust. Our Polk AC staff has worked so hard to help these babies decompress and let down their guard.
