I took some time to celebrate my graduation, passing my board exam, and making up for lost time with friends and family. Now I’m officially days away from beginning my first day as a Doctor of Veterinary medicine interning in my hometown of San Diego.

So many victories, such a time of emotion, after many years of sacrifice, monotony, highs, lows, and life being great at doing the unpredictable despite all the planning.

Through it all, what I hold closest to me are the moments leading up to the highlights shared and celebrated. The times not pictured— times I’ve had to dig deep and stay the course and most of all, the times God’s reminded me in my hardest moments of His loving kindness. Whether that be through friends, family, my partner, faculty, vets in the field, or a timely word of encouragement-even from a stranger. I’m grateful for it all.

With so much uncertainty in the world right now, no te rindes-hay belleza en la lucha.💪🏽👑

2024 was a year of many full circle moments along with the natural highs, lows, and everything in between. While some dreams took the backseat as I made space to study for my board exam and apply to internships, I learned that sometimes pressing pause isn’t stepping back but strategically moving forward. Here are some moments that shaped my story a bit this year. I believe the stage is set for an even more amazing year ahead🤞🏽

1. One of my first surgical patients ♥️ (April)
2. A quick picture before taking primary responsibility on many spay/neuters during my shelter rotation!(October)
3. My first time at the Gibbon Conservation Center as a volunteer (2017)—>
4. & 5. Visiting the Gibbon Conservation Center as a vet student to assist in a short anesthetic procedure, perform a physical exam on an anesthetized gibbon, and practice using wildlife immobilization techniques (March)

(Part 2/2): My favorite rotation so far🐴🤎
Growing up, I never had the the opportunity to be around horses. So this rotation was very daunting for me at the beginning but also so exciting. I got to work with the equine veterinarians that work day & night, rain or shine, leaving home at the break of dawn to often return after dark for these majestic, silly at times, amazing creatures. Caring for their health and just witnessing a human animal bond that has been maintained for generations was awesome. I was so blessed to get so much hands-on experience during this rotation. Helping with dentals, gastroscopic exams, lameness exams, and everything in between🐎. I also left with such an admiration for the people who truly keep equine centers thriving. Gente de la comunidad hispana that are there day in & day out, caring for each and every horse that I had the pleasure to work with. When I had the chance to chat with them I did. One of them told me he comes from the same region my mom was born in in Mexico, and he proceeded to ask me if I enjoy what I do. I responded to him with a big smile & said, I love what I do.

Part 1/2 for my updates on 3rd year clinical rotations🩺🐾: Small animal block was good. Solid🙌. A learning curve I needed. Challenging, and very fast paced. I also had the pleasure to participate in some community outreach events and activities, (one of them taking place in my hometown!) that filled my cup tremendously. I believe rotations intimately reacquaint us with the fact that we are a select culmination of what people pour in to us. I’m thankful for each experience, the good, the bad, & mediocre. I’m thankful for the great individuals that have mentored me along my career/life journey, believed in me and spoke life into me, my career, my future, and my capacity today as an example and positive influence in the lives of others. Especially in the lives of people from backgrounds underrepresented in medicine looking to be apart of the vet med community. 🤎🤍🤎
