Difference is a source of possibility.

I’ve been fascinated by difference for as long as I can remember.

When I meet people doing things differently, questioning the usual way or finding their own route, my curiosity is sparked.

Not because different is better.

But because I want to understand why — and what else might be possible.

We are living in a time where certainty is hard to find. Change, complexity and chaos are all around us.

So perhaps we need to get more comfortable with not knowing.

To pause.
To stay curious.
To experiment.
To play.

What if, rather than trying to control the chaos, we explored what might make possible?

Difference is a source of possibility.

Different perspectives are often seen as challenging, messy or difficult to manage. So certainty can feel like the safer route.

But what might we discover if we stayed curious a little longer?

Imagine a traditional percussionist and an electronic keyboard player creating something new together.

They each bring ideas, experience and ways of working.

They listen to each other, respond and experiment, remaining open to what might emerge.

The difference isn't something to overcome. It becomes part of what makes the new possible.

I think leadership can work in the same way.

Rather than rushing to resolve different perspectives, we can create the space to ask questions, test, learn and explore.

Sometimes new thinking begins when we stay with the difference.

What might become possible if we didn't rush to certainty our usual way of doing or responding?

Navigating Difference. It’s not always an either/or.

You’re right. I’m wrong.

A binary choice.
One answer.
One perspective that wins.

Sometimes the work is learning how to hold multiple perspectives — and asking what we do with them.

This is the first video in a series on Navigating Difference.

It’s close to my heart. In many ways, it’s a life’s work.

It connects deeply to the work I do across industry, institutions and communities — navigating multiple opportunities, complex challenges and divergent perspectives.

Because when we remain curious and open, when we pause rather than rush to judgement, and when we create the conditions for structured, purposeful conversation, something different can happen.

We can begin to see what each perspective is telling us.

And sometimes, the truth isn’t held by one person.

It sits somewhere between us.

That’s where the interesting work begins.

A top up of unity at the Umoja Network and Africa Comes to Bournemouth community gathering. Great location, delicious food and vital connection. Umoja means unity in Swahilli and we need this more than ever at the moment.

Bringing people together to gather with no agenda but to connect and see what naturally arises.

Along with yummy food @amiekitchen and laughter all around we open up, exchange stories and find a little bit of hope through human connection.

Filling our cups to get back on with the everyday grind. Better connected and stronger for it🚀💚🚀

This is one of the ways that i build in slowing down and pausing when running my own business and creative freelance life.

To make the most of my time i often bring a question, a provocation to ponder moving up the river.

Some days i paddle with tranquility in my heart and others I'm on a mission to burn energy. ☺️

When the stillness arrives, pausing and taking a breath, looking up around, gives me the space to relax and move through the current challenge and fully tap into what i really need/ and focus on for the day ahead.

Im curious, whats your go to pause to recalibrate 💚

There is something about a train journey and a walk through the New Forest to meet a client halfway.

It reminded me that many leaders don't need reinvention.

They need recalibration. A moment to pause.

To step back from the demands, decisions and distractions.

To ask:
What still matters?
What needs to evolve?
What am I ready to let go of?

In the creative and cultural sectors, leadership often means carrying vision, responsibility and uncertainty all at once.

It is easy to become so focused on what needs to happen next that we lose sight of the space needed to think abd expand the vision.

I have been exploring a simple idea:

Some of our best leadership emerges not from doing more, but from creating room to reflect.

Pause.
Reflect.
Explore.
Reframe.
Clarify.
Resource.
Take action.

Another great night of music, last week it was the excellent Sula. Last night's treat was larger than life @delesosimi afrobeat band - a get up and dance vibe - sharing his life working with Fela Kuti and Africa 80. Each band member bringing their quality and love for Afrobeat rythm.

A joy sharing the evening with @recettessucrees1859 and jojo, @a_henry__ and seeing many familiar faces in the audience

Big shout out to a key panel contributor @sharonjamesartist, who self identifies as a Black, queer, visual artist, curator and community leader.

Their multidisciplinary practice spans painting, drawing and printmaking. Deeply entwined with a commitment to equity and representation.

Sharon also a @yourshoutnetwork partnership member representing herself, @radicle_arts and @gotbeaf Access Beaf coordinator.

I attended the @bcpculturalcompact networking event to support Sharon and connect with the team and local artists in abundance.

Strategically, BCP are heading into Town of Culture applications - the rise of different voices at the table is encouraging to witness

Lets make space for different, divergent voices to be heard and shape the future of culture, industry, institutions and community in the south west
