From the team at @bondsaus, @longstoryshortagency and myself ~ to the entire Deaf, HoH, and disabled LGBTQIA+ communities and friends! Here’s an Auslan video just for you.

Thanks to the BONDS team allowing me sign in my interview and be part of post production to do my own voice over too. I am so thankful to work with productions who encourage and embrace who I am and my bilingualism 🖤🌈

This is my story.

National Week of Deaf People theme is “Declaring Deaf People’s Human Rights”.

Joining the community since 2021 has always been a pride journey, learning Auslan and who I am as a fully Deaf person is something that I’m so lucky that I hope any person with deafness can experience a deaf world because you will never wanna leave!

Though, six years later in the community. As an adult, I get heart palpitations around what I do in the TV Industry or what I post on a public profile. I always think, will deaf people get me? will hearing people get me?

I’ve had plenty of shares for getting shamed for speaking in life or on TV or not knowing international signs enough.

I had an teacher recently said I’m not true deaf because of my medical past with cochlear implant and not growing up with sign language. When I hear comments like this, it’s stings because I think of the little me; how hard it was without the cochlear implant, I had no Auslan. Just grabbing family’s throats to feel vibrations. How hard I fought growing up deaf in a country. Toxic adults will ignore your blood and tears to get where you are now.

I’m grateful for the love that I have but I do have moments when I can’t hear something, when someone doesn’t sign or repeat speaking a word…my emotions around deafness becomes a roller coaster.

It is a battle of staying true to yourself for asking Auslan, captions, a quiet environment to speak or using notes to read instead. I have energy to talk around hearing people until the sounds become blurry, I have energy to sign around deaf people until hands become blurry.

English isn’t my best friend, and Auslan wasn’t my first language. You may say I am fluent in both, but there are times I don’t know a sign or don’t know how to speak a word, it’s a mind fuck how to express.

I’m proud of all the tools that I have now which thank you to the Deaf community for teaching me and made me the best version I am today with access and identity. That’s why I encourage parents with deaf kids or deaf adults to get involved in the community to learn from the best 🤟🏽

LAST SEEN, new Australian series released on @appletv!

I had the pleasure working as a Transport Assistant under the @wearevicscreen attachment program. We travelled all around Victoria for this magic to happen for 6 months! Longest I’ve been away from life!

Grateful for the productions, especially the Transport Department for supporting me with access and so on 🫶🏼

Excited to share that my @signonscreen FILM/TV Auslan Interpreters webpage is now ready! 🎬🤟🏼 Link in bio.

This website is a shared resource for Australian productions to find qualified Auslan interpreters without the stress of getting lost where to contact and reducing the pressure on Deaf talent and Deaf crew is the key priority.

The Auslan interpreters listed are familiar with and experienced in working on set, helping create a smoother and more accessible experience for both Deaf and hearing cast and crew members.

A huge thank you to @signonscreen for supporting my project. I really hope this resource helps shift access and inclusion across the Australian screen industry and creates smoother processes for the Deaf community and Auslan interpreters around the Australian Film/TV sets. taken in Australia by @nathan_borg

💙 @Nathan_Borg is proof that embracing your identity can change everything.

From Neighbours to those iconic @Bondsaus ads, he’s shared his story in both Auslan and English, making sure Deaf and hard of hearing people feel included.

And his advocacy is a clear message: it’s up to creative industries to increase representation – inclusion shouldn’t fall only on those who have to fight for it.

Thanks for sharing your story, Nathan. You’re reminding us all there’s space for everyone, and inspiring others to believe there’s a place for them, too. 🫶
