“It is not simply a description of a distant land, but an evocation of longing itself, where the imagination fashions a paradise from fragments of memory.”

Reminiscing about Nathaniel Meyer’s previous solo exhibition “Under a Swift Sunrise”, on display earlier this year.

Here’s a look at the few pieces remaining from the show, now at Moss Falmouth ✨

Oasis, 2026. Oil on canvas, 16”x38”. One of the things that continues to fascinate me about painting is the mechanics of picture making; the spoken and unspoken rules that govern how an image is constructed, and how it is perceived.

Sometimes, flipping one of those rules around makes for an interesting challenge- In Oasis 2, it’s reversing the familiar spatial convention that warm colors come forward while cool colors recede. By making the foreground way cooler than the background, I wanted to invert that expected color logic and create a pictorial atmosphere that feels extra cool and calm, as it is contrasted with the chromatic heat that is happening outside this little oasis.

As we count down the days to Camden on Canvas, we'll be highlighting each of the twenty-three participating artists! Today, we are featuring Nathaniel Meyer @nathaniel_meyer of South Portland, ME.

Nathaniel Meyer is a painter whose work reimagines the landscape as a space of memory, longing, and myth. Grounded in plein air observation yet composed entirely from recollection, his paintings inhabit the threshold between realism and invention. Meyer’s work has been exhibited nationally, including solo presentations at the Spring/Break Art Show in New York and Los Angeles, and features in New American Paintings (2024). He is the recipient of the Blanche E. Colman Award (2022) and lives and works in Cumberland, Maine.

Visit his website at www.nathaniel-meyer.com

Camden on Canvas is made possible thanks to Lead Sponsor Ken Gardiner, Edward Jones Investments – Camden; Liz Senders of Once A Tree; and Colin Page of Page Gallery.

Sometimes We Stay Out All Night, 2026. Oil on canvas, 48”x36”. I thought the idea of dandelions staying out and taking in the night air instead of closing up for the evening was an interesting one.
It reminds me of early Dutch still lives, where artists would depict a vase of assorted flowers that all bloom at radically different times of the year- viewers at the time would have immediately recognized the impossibility of the arrangement, understanding it as a deliberate fiction rather than purely observational.
Much of that meaning has faded over time. We’re generally less attuned to the rhythms of the seasons than those viewers were, so what would have once read as an intentional impossibility often passes unnoticed today.

My very good friends Chris and Lori recently opened a bar, and I made them a 8’x6’ painting to go in their new space- I think it really ties the room together :)
Go check it out at The Dooryard Pub in South Portland and have yourself a drink or two! by @nathaniel_meyer

Hidden Impacts, 2026. Oil on canvas, 48x36. In this painting, I wanted the frame to feel less like a separate object and more like an extension of the piece itself, so the border and frame are tied directly into the image. The spruce trees, flowers, and leaves in the border echo the forms in the painting, but in a more stylized, ornamental language. Frame->border->image= passing through layers of artifice.

I have a couple new balls in the air on this one, which made it a little more of a beast than I anticipated: bringing in the decorative border, giving the frame a more active role in the composition, and going for a kind of Grant Wood-esque diorama feeling in the central image. Pretty excited about where it landed, and even more excited about the new avenues it’s opening up :)

Eventide, 2026. Center panel 32”x54”, side panels 28”x54”. This triptych was a commission- haven’t done a triptych in a few years, but am excited to do more. I love the partial symmetry and the compositional push towards the center. Delivering it down to Manhattan was an adventure, but second time’s the charm!!

"Halcyon Nest" by Nathaniel Meyer

halcyon:

1. a mythical bird said by ancient writers to breed in a nest floating at sea at the winter solstice, charming the wind and waves to calm.

2. denoting a period of time in the past that was idyllically happy and peaceful.
