Camden Public Library's fifth Camden on Canvas Plein Air Weekend was a great success! We are thrilled to announce that the Camden on Canvas auction raised an unofficial total of $70,525 for the library's Campaign for the Future! 🌈🎨

For two days, 21 talented landscape artists from around New England painted en plein air, bringing beloved and new perspectives of Camden and Rockport area to the canvas. On Sunday, we transformed the library into an exhibit space where the public poured in to see the fresh paintings, followed by a lively and well-attended reception. We then filled our beautiful and historic Reading Room for the exciting live auction, led by Kaja Veilleux of Thomaston Place Auction Galleries. Every painting went to a new home, with the artists donating 50% of the proceeds to the library.

We extend our gratitude to the artists, event supporters and sponsors, committee members, library staff and trustees, the community from near and far who joined us, those who bid on paintings, and the generous folks who opted to give an additional donation to the library during the auction. Together, we'll support our library's resilient future for years to come!

Nathaniel Meyer credits childhood summers along the Maine Coast as inspiration for his simultaneously familiar yet otherworldly landscapes. He also cites the work of painter and illustrator N.C. Wyeth (1882 – 1945) – who famously spent summers in Maine – and Canadian painter A.J. Casson (1898 – 1992) as important influences on his distinctive style.

Both artists shared a gift for translating the raw power and beauty of the natural world into paintings at once poetic and precisely observed — a sensibility that runs unmistakably through Meyer's own work.

"Halcyon Nest" by Nathaniel Meyer

halcyon:

1. a mythical bird said by ancient writers to breed in a nest floating at sea at the winter solstice, charming the wind and waves to calm.

2. denoting a period of time in the past that was idyllically happy and peaceful.
