Before anything reaches the shelf, and long before a reader or researcher even sees it, our collections are sorted, catalogued, and preserved in a permanent home.📚🔍

That work covers everything from old manuscripts to vintage phone cards once used on public payphones, each one donated as a small contribution to preserving Singapore's documentary heritage.

This episode looks at the quieter side of the National Library's work as Singapore's memory institution—the careful process behind every item that becomes part of Singapore’s documentary heritage. Yu Mei, NL Arts Librarian, shares what that process looks like, and the small details that quietly speak to Singapore's past.

There's a whole side of the library you don't normally see. Take a peek behind the scenes. 👀 by @nationallibrarysg

Fish head curry is a popular (and expensive) restaurant dish today, but this wasn’t always the case. Spice queen Devagi Sanmugam remembers when only poor people ate it. She delves into how the dish came about, spells out why fish head curry uses different spices from meat curries, and explains how a clay pot makes all the difference.

Did you know the former Poh Kim Quarry at Bukit Batok Hill was used to road test new cars? Former Cycle & Carriage quality inspector James Tann recalled sometimes driving new Mercedes-Benz cars along its rough gravel tracks to test for rattles and vibrations in the late 1970s.

Once a granite quarry, the site was left unused in the early 1970s and eventually became part of Bukit Batok Nature Park in the 1980s.

Do you have memories of Bukit Batok’s changing landscapes? It’s your last chance to contribute to Bukit Batok Memories before submissions close on 30 Sep! https://go.gov.sg/bbmemories (link in bio)
