East Potomac Golf Links emerged from an early 20th-century vision to transform East Potomac Park into a “model public playground” for the nation, with golf at its center. Although the idea for a course surfaced in 1911, it wasn’t until 1914 that planning began in earnest. Walter Travis, already renowned for his architectural work and stature as a leading amateur, was selected as architect. Inspired by the Old Course at St. Andrews, he designed an inventive reversible routing, and by the summer of 1917, construction began.

The first nine holes, known as the A-B Course for its two directions, opened in 1920 and were described as “a true Travis creation…characterized by rolling, undulating, well-trapped greens." It quickly became a local sensation. President Warren G. Harding played frequently, and Gene Sarazen hosted a clinic and match there in 1922. Travis’ second nine, the C-D Course, followed soon after, allowing East Potomac to host the 1923 US Amateur Public Links Championship. Over time, Travis’ original A-B and C-D courses evolved into today’s Blue Course, which is played in a routing most similar to the former B and D directions.

Success spurred continued growth. In 1925, William Flynn designed a third reversible layout, the E-F Course, known for its more approachable greens and its setting among some of Washington, DC’s oldest flowering cherry trees. The E-F Course eventually became today’s White Course. By the time this 1927 aerial was taken, East Potomac had already established itself as one of the country’s premier examples of accessible, affordable public golf.

Following our rehabilitations of Rock Creek Park Golf by Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner and Langston Golf Course by Beau Welling, our attention will turn to East Potomac Golf Links. World-renowned architect, Tom Doak, will restore the Blue Course to its reversible roots. As part of this long-term plan, the facility will remain affordable and accessible to all.

Moving day is in the books at the 2026 National Links Trust Championship presented by DICK'S Sporting Goods.

A long, wet golf course was made more difficult by cold temperatures and gusty winds. In the Men's Division, Nabeel Khan (Lewis Center, OH) holds a one shot lead, but four players, including first round leaders Chris Burns and Ryan McGarry and inaugural champion Tyler McKeever, are within two shots of the lead. In the Women's Division, Allison Olberding (Arlington, VA) birdied the closing hole to take a one shot lead over two-time defending champion Mia Zanghetti into the final round.

Play begins off the first and tenth tees tomorrow morning at 8 AM.
