69 YEARS AGO TODAY — SEPTEMBER 9, 1957

On this day 69 years ago, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the Civil Rights Act of 1957, creating the U.S. Department of Justice Civil Rights Division and marking a new federal commitment to protecting the civil and voting rights of Americans.

That same historic year, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference was born under the leadership of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Two institutions—one within government and one powered by a movement—began a journey that would help transform America.

As SCLC prepares to celebrate 70 years in 2027, we recognize this important anniversary and the continuing responsibility to protect voting rights, equality and justice for all. by @nationalsclc

I’m deeply saddened at the loss of my dear friend and fellow Kappa Alpha Psi brother, Dr. Levon LeBan.

A U.S. Army veteran, minister, and retired educator, he served the New Orleans Parish Schools for over 20 years, with multiple accolades — including “Teacher of the Year”.

An accomplished researcher and skilled writer, he supervised a crisis hotline in our city, established intervention strategies for handling crisis situations, and led spiritual care for the Red Cross in Louisiana — aiding victims of natural disasters.

From the military to the educational system, his fraternity, philanthropy, and ministry, Levon’s life was one of service to his community.

He wasn’t a man who loved power, but he deeply understood the power of LOVE, and his light impacted those both near and far.

We salute the life and legacy of this dear man of God and send our deepest condolences to his family. by @nationalsclc

Dr. Bernard LaFayette Jr. received a special recognition honoring his lifetime of service to the Civil Rights Movement and his enduring commitment to nonviolence, justice, equality, and human dignity.
The recognition came from the office of U.S. Senator Cory Booker as an addition to the United States Congressional Record, ensuring that Dr. LaFayette’s extraordinary contributions to American history and the struggle for civil and human rights are formally recognized and preserved.
The presentation was made by Adwoa Rey of the National Council of Churches, during a moving moment of tribute to Dr. LaFayette’s decades of leadership, teaching, organizing, and advocacy. by @nationalsclc
