Left a gorgeous luncheon at @dookychaserestaurant with @nationalsclc and there were two big takeaways: 1) A reminder that we can't really accomplish much on our own... it takes collaboration and organizing with others to get shit done. Let's go further together. đŸ«¶ 2) Early vote!!!!!!! They can't interfere as easily with early voting as they can on election day. I know there are some saying what's the point of voting when these systems aren't working for us... and I get it. Trust. đŸ˜© But right now... this is our best shot. Voting is a real, tangible way we still have people power. Make a plan, bring a friend/neighbor and early vote. If you need a boost or support come to 7100 St. Charles Avenue tonight for 6pm for snacks and to hear from @voiceoftheexperienced on how to get out the vote. Would love to see you there!

Leadership isn’t always loud. Sometimes, it’s the calm presence that changes everything. Annie Pearl Avery reflects on the influence of Ella Joe Baker, a woman whose leadership was not defined by television appearances or a microphone, but by her wisdom, suggestions, presence, and ability to inspire others. In a moment of deep frustration, Annie remembers being ready to respond with violence. But Ella Baker remained calm—and that calmness helped Annie find her own. “That’s leadership.” Ella Baker’s legacy reminds us that true leadership doesn’t always demand attention. Sometimes, it is found in the person who listens, remains grounded, and helps others choose a better path. Influence doesn’t always need a spotlight. Sometimes, it simply needs courage, wisdom, and calm. #NAN #EllaBaker #ellajobaker #Leadership #blackhistory

I’m deeply saddened at the loss of my dear friend and fellow Kappa Alpha Psi brother, Dr. Levon LeBan. A U.S. Army veteran, minister, and retired educator, he served the New Orleans Parish Schools for over 20 years, with multiple accolades — including “Teacher of the Year”. An accomplished researcher and skilled writer, he supervised a crisis hotline in our city, established intervention strategies for handling crisis situations, and led spiritual care for the Red Cross in Louisiana — aiding victims of natural disasters.   From the military to the educational system, his fraternity, philanthropy, and ministry, Levon’s life was one of service to his community. He wasn’t a man who loved power, but he deeply understood the power of LOVE, and his light impacted those both near and far. We salute the life and legacy of this dear man of God and send our deepest condolences to his family.

Happy Sunday everyone! For our next member profile we caught up with @ronbusbyjr . Here’s what Ron shared about himself, his collection, and his APIC experience! How long have you been collecting? 7 years. In college I taped copies of the vintage and antique posters I have framed on my walls now. It feels full circle in that way. How long have you been a member of APIC? A formal member for 1 year but I was part of the groups and attended shows. I appreciated the people and authenticity of the relationships. That’s why I am happy to be a member going forward. How did you get involved in the hobby? I would go to the conventions or auctions and realize it was APIC members often winning, buying, or running the collector events I loved. Knowing that there was a singular place I could go to for community was gratifying. Why do you collect what you do? I think there is something totemic about items that have survived these existential fights for a better, more inclusive America. These items of political protest and progress are a reminder of how much has been accomplished and how much is still incomplete. They are a reminder we are all stewards of a great legacy of civil rights and that we have a responsibility to make headway in this modern era as well. What’s your favorite piece from your collection? I have a poster for a concert where Coretta Scott King was singing to raise money for the civil rights movement and SCLC. She was a trained concert soprano who wanted to be a performer before meeting Dr. King. The tickets were $1. It’s a reminder that we all have the ability to use our voice and gifts for causes that matter What’s the best part about being part of APIC? APIC reminds you that history isn’t just stories or books—it’s objects and ephemera that give a tactile perspective on the past. There is a community of people with random interests in love with preserving history. All of these people are protecting these items for a generation to appreciate our nation’s deserved identities and personalities. #civilrights #collection #identity #history #community

As we close the 69th year of the @nationalsclc and 67th National Convention. I am reflecting on this week's work and workshops, remarks and moments of remembrance. We celebrated the legacy of Dr. Lafayette who transitioned earlier this year and honored the quiet yet effective. As I look at the make up of this new national board of directors, this is our Sankofa phase and I am proud to be in that number! These are moments with cause for "leadership, not lamenting" as my brother @demarkliggins would say. #dothework May there be courage. May there be blessing. May there be resilience.

You'll often hear Greenville's desegregation described as peaceful, dignified, even undertaken with grace and style. What gets left out of that version is what was actually being printed in the city's only major newspaper while it was happening. The Greenville News was owned by the Peace family. Its 1960 editorials were written by editor Wayne C. Freeman, and according to research analyzing those editorials, his unsigned writing was understood to reflect the paper's official position. That year, as Greenville's civil rights movement moved from the courts into the streets, Freeman wrote at least 54 editorials on race relations, almost all following the same pattern: casting the white South as the real victim of the conflict, not the Black community demonstrating against segregation. When Black students, among them a college freshman named Jesse Jackson, sat in at the segregated library on July 16, 1960, Freeman warned the demonstrations would only destroy a library serving roughly 200,000 citizens. When the city closed the library entirely that September rather than integrate it, his editorials framed the closure as something forced upon the city, not a choice it made. He called sit-in protesters "knowingly or not, inciting riots," labeled the integration push "an insidious sort of subversion" by "outside agitators," and warned of "a vicious and vengeant Reconstruction of the White South." None of this ran quietly. It appeared in the paper most Greenville households read, framing Black citizens asking to use a library as the aggressors. That's not the same story as dignified desegregation undertaken with grace and style. What happened wasn't handed over gracefully. It was extracted, after the courts forced it, while the paper of record spent the year arguing the people trying to use a library were the real threat. @visitgreenvillesc @cityofgreenvillesc @greenvillenews @historyistimeless @nationalsclc @aclu_nationwide @splcenter @greenvillelibrary @historyphotographed @historyfeels @historycoolkids @furmanpaladins @furmanuniversity @ardtakeaction @revjjackson #history #greenvillesc #greenville #segregation
