Introducing National Students for a Democratic Society’s toolkit for progressive student organizers: kick TPUSA off campus!

This toolkit is built on the successful experiences of several SDS chapters across the country in getting the reactionary, racist and opportunist chapters of TPUSA off our campuses.

Every year black people across the country are found dead under “unexplainable” circumstances. The police improperly investigate, no charges are brought, and the victim’s families are left with no answers or justice. We see the mishandling of Nolan Wells’ case as one of many examples of this racist pattern. We know without true community control of the police this will continue. For true justice and accountability the people must demand better than the current racist system.

Justice for Nolan Wells!

Students for a Democratic Society at UIC is launching our open letter and petition in defense of Free Speech at UIC!

In the context of increasing attacks on students' right to free speech around the country and our own UIC administration restricting student speech, assembly and tabling we put forward these demands to our administration:
1. NO PRIOR AUTHORIZATION FOR TABLING ON CAMPUS
2. NO OPEN EXPRESSION FORM FOR STUDENT SPEECH AND ASSEMBLY

NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION: WHAT HAPPENED TO NOLAN WELLS? MOTHERS AND FAMILIES DAY OF ACTION

NOVEMBER IS THE MONTH OF ACTION FOR FAMILIES

The National Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression (NAARPR) is calling for a Month of Action for Families and for branches and affiliates to take part in a day of action in the name of Nolan Wells, Kohen Wiley, and every mother and family still waiting for answers.

Throughout the month of November, we are calling for actions across the country for families who have lost loved ones to police and racist violence. Nolan Wells was an 18-year-old Black college student found dead after a boating trip, and a grand jury declined to bring charges despite unexplained blunt force trauma. Kohen Wiley was a 1-year-old Black boy shot and killed in June by Senatobia, Mississippi police Sgt. Hunter Foster, who fired into a moving vehicle during a response to a shoplifting call over diapers. The Mississippi Attorney General's Office cleared Foster of criminal wrongdoing, ruling his use of force "justified," and he will face no charges. Kohen's family says the body-camera footage shows the shooting was not justified, and his grandmother said, "The word 'justified' has haunted me. There's no justification for that." His family is demanding a federal investigation.

We tie Nolan Wells and Kohen Wiley directly to our families at home and every loved one killed by police violence or found dead under unexplained circumstances whose family has been left with nothing but questions. We demand a federal investigation into Nolan Wells' death, Kohen Wiley's death, along with accountability in cases in our own local communities. We demand community control of the police. We demand justice for all mothers and families who are forced to celebrate their holiday months with the thoughts of lost their loved ones and still having no answers.

NAARPR calls on all NAARPR branches, affiliate organizations, and every strain of the movement to make November a month of action for families. We call this plan of action to ask the question; What happened to Nolan Wells? What happened to Kohen Wiley? What happened to our loved ones? by @nationalsds

Dean of Students attempts to confront students during SDS’ Study in about what SDS should be doing and reach out to the student news. Instead of offering students what they want which is a meeting with the President, Provost, and Dean of Students to get guarantees around protections for Student Visas, a commitment to real legal support for students facing deportation, and a guarantee to not revoke any student green cards.

Our administration shouldn’t hide behind the idea of not having enough authority they should commit to standing up and protecting their students no matter what is coming out of the White House. by @nationalsds

EMU SDS member Jon giving a speech demanding that EMU’s administration enact sanctuary policies to protect international and immigrant students. Admin claims its policies are progressive, yet the university complied with the Trump administration last school year by deporting two students. Sanctuary campus now! New Orleans, LA – On October 3 and 4, the 20th National Convention of Students for a Democratic Society was held with great success. Over 240 student and youth activists gathered in New Orleans, Louisiana to say, “Keep up the fight on campus!” and “Build a movement against Trump!” Students from around 26 chapters across the country gathered to learn from seasoned activists, exchange experiences, vote on resolutions, and elect national officers.

Despite facing repression from their universities and the Trump administration, the organizers were united and steadfast in their drive to keep fighting. As SDS’ recently re-elected president, Erin Boyle, put it, “Before SDS, I felt pessimistic about what was going on. I don’t feel that way anymore!”

With the rampant and ongoing threat of ICE terror, SDSers spoke on their campaigns for sanctuary campus policies on the panel entitled “ICE Out Now! Sanctuary Campus Now: Immigrant Rights and the Student Movement.”

On that panel, Sasmit Rahman of the University of Minnesota recalled the noise demonstrations that SDSers conducted outside of ICE agents’ hotel rooms during the Trump administration’s Operation Metro Surge in Minneapolis.

“There's a deep-rooted collective rage that our noise demos tapped into. You're seeing the kidnapping of immigrants all across the cities, and the kidnappers and occupiers are in the building in front of you. Trying to control that rage, actually, is not our job at all,” Rahman said.

Earlier in the day, SDSers and other activists spoke on the “Money for Education, Not for Wars and Occupation: Continuing the Tradition of Anti-war Student Activism” panel. It was there that Navya Prakash of Together United Louisiana (TUL) SDS spoke on her chapter’s strong anti-war and anti-Zionist efforts in spite of the rabidly pro-Israel administration of Tulane University.

Yesterday, October 23rd, LSU SDS alongside Feminist in Action, Tiger Prison Project, Injustice Reform, Freedom Road Socialist Org, and Tigers Against Sexual Assault rallied and marched in protest of LSU administration’s protection of Damien Shanklin and attacks on our cultural centers.

Starting in Free Speech Alley our coalition marched across campus towards LSU Sports Administration to make our demands heard.

1) Restore the Cultural Centers to their full functioning capacity’s with independent directors, Graduate Assistants, student workers, programming, and all of their previously maintained mechanics that allowed the centers to run at their full capacities.

2) Restore the Title IX Office and Reopen the Office of Engagement to their fully functioning capacity’s, as we’ve seen the downstream effects of having a bloated, overworked Title IX office, without an Office of Engagement to supplement the Student Affairs end of the work, throughout this semester.

3) Expel Damien Shanklin and all other rapists, as well as LSU committing to implementing a zero tolerance policy for those found guilty of rape and/or sexual assault!

LSU administration believes that ignoring the lack of protections for women and minority students is easier than hearing out the wants and needs of students who fund their paychecks. That protecting rapists is more important than not having one play football for them. That bending the knee to Trump and Jeff Landry is simpler than standing up for the students they should be serving.

Our coalition will NOT rest until these demands are met! We know how important it is to dare to struggle because we know when to dare to win!

Join us in our fight to make LSU campus a better, safer place for all! by @nationalsds
