How lucky to be able to do this after almost a decade of hiatus. Through the years, many have asked if I’d ever do metal vocals again and why I stopped. I always been apprehensive and laughed it off cause I truly felt I had lost the knack and technique in my years away from doing it. Also, metal vocals uses a specific set of muscles in the throat which is unique to each vocalist and their vocal tone. I genuinely thought I had lost the technique over the many years where I was doing other type of music, primarily Native Indian stuff. But out of the blue, a month or so ago, I was driving around and decided to play Devin Townsend’s Strapping Young Lad albums and a few other metal records and as I was listening, even without realizing I was singing along and before I knew it, I had rediscovered the technique. This is not any formal technique or anything, and almost like mimicry. Since then it was a call away to the gents at @trojanhorse.india and felt like the timing couldn’t have been better. Now that I’ve rediscovered this technique, I will exploit it lol. No I mean, I will use it wisely to do what I’ve always enjoyed about metal and specifically metal vocals. The ability to write lyrics in metal themes and explore these depth of the themes that we speak about in our music and makes metal vocals an integral part of the groove and not just a meandering layer there for keep sake. My metal vocal inspirations have always been the ones who did that to the genre, like Devin or Randy Blythe or Mikael - they’ve made metal vocals go beyond the rough noise that muggles tend to see it as. Metal lyrics have always been the most intricate amongst all genres and metal/rock vocalists have been the greatest frontmen across all genres too. Time to live up to what the greats have taught me. Here’s to more metal in years to come.
