Every flag represents a community, a culture, and a people.

This weekend, athletes from tribes across the country came together on one field, proudly representing where they come from while competing at the highest level. Seeing these flags fly together is a reminder that the Native American All-Star Showcase is about more than baseball. It’s about honoring identity, celebrating heritage, and showcasing the strength and unity of Native communities.

Thank you to every athlete, family, and Tribal Nation that made this moment possible. by @nativeathletes

Today, we mourn the loss of Tylen "Ty" Valandra.

Ty was a member of the Ta'Tanka team at the Native All-American Football Game in Dallas and had recently completed his freshman year at the University of South Dakota.

Our coaches and mentors spend countless hours building relationships with the young athletes who come through our programs. While each connection is unique, some individuals leave an impression that extends far beyond a single conversation. Ty was one of those people. He was outgoing, confident, and never hesitated to walk up, introduce himself, ask questions, and engage with those around him.

By every account, he was a remarkable young man and a gifted athlete with a bright future ahead of him.

There are many broken hearts today. Our thoughts and prayers are with Ty's family, friends, teammates, coaches, and community as they navigate this unimaginable loss.

At the Native American Athletic Foundation, our mission is to empower Native youth through sports, mentorship, and leadership opportunities. We strive to help young people see what is possible for their future and provide pathways to help them achieve it.

When we lose a young Native person, we are reminded why this work matters. We are reminded that every young athlete is more than a player. They are a son, a friend, a teammate, a student, a leader, and an important part of their community.

Today, we ask you to join us in remembering Ty. Take a moment to honor his life, hold his loved ones close in your thoughts, and reflect on what more we can do together to support and uplift Native youth.

Rest in peace, Ty. Your memory will not be forgotten. by @nativeathletes
