At @nativefish4tomorrow we love to take kids fishing. They get excited about every fish that hits the bank. Their curiosity and enthusiasm is contagious.

Recently we were able to do two very different fishing events. The first was a Scout troop on the MinnesotaRiver. Scouts were able to practice their fishing skills and made serious progress on their fishing merit badges. We learned fish ID, fish handling, where to find fish in a river, and how they migrated.

The most recent event was with @saintpaulparks on the Mississippi River for National Public Lands Day. This was an open house format with effectively no barriers to participation. Lines were out, rods in forked sticks, and people waited for a bite in turn. When a fish bit we handed the rod to whoever's turn it was! And with 5 or 6 lines out they usually didn't have to wait long! We kept a few fish in a "live well" made from a laundry basket so everyone could see a native fish, even if they didn't have time to fish. Lots of great conversations on the river bank as people learned that redhorse are not carp!

On both days the vast majority of fish caught were native species. In fact, I think we only got one invasive each day. Proof these ecosystems are still dominated by native fish.

Lastly, I'd just like to say @NativeFish4tomorrow is run by volunteers. @buffalo_catcher, @kol_eric and @etkhandmade made these two events happen. Hey, our social media person is gone this week. So this is what I've got.

We will be doing fishing events for National Public Lands Day Saturday Sept 26 at Hidden Falls Park in Saint Paul, MN and the Fall Play Day October 24 Crosby Farm Park in St. Paul, MN.

We are also doing the Nobel Conference at St. Olaf College October 7th. And "For the Love of a River" at the Minnesota River Valley National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center Sunday October 18th.

Native Fish Fest 2026 was a GAR-gantuan SUCKER-cess. Native Fish 4 Tomorrow's board was absolutely thrilled by the turn out. Nobody exemplifies the Native Fish Fest enthusiasm quite like @aefl_uwgb members that drive NINE HOURS (round-trip) to attend NFF! They participated on all the festivities and even brought their own sucker and buffalo stickers!

Thanks again to everyone who came, ate, had fun, made gyotaku, caught fish, and shared your support for native fish.

We are already planning next year. What does NFF mean to you? What should we add for next year?

Native Fish are NOT trash and deserve protection! Many of them are ancient, super fun to catch, and taste delicious!

After a wildly successful native fish fest 2026, we are back to the normal social media posts (sort of, our board has been very busy as of late so we haven't had the typical posting frequency sorry!). Thank you to all who attended!

Went to Native Fish Fest today and had a V agreeable time! So many smart and thoughtful people in one space. Highly inspirational. Also got to meet and hang out with some excellent individuals. Should have taken more photos. ❤️

Native Fish Fest is back for 2026! Bigger and better than ever! @kimberly_boustead will be teaching gyotaku printing with native fish. @tedhansen_art will have native fish art for sale. @thegarlab will bring 100 gar. @_fish_food612 will have native fish food, including a smoked drum dip! We'll have native fish fishing too!

Not to mention the entire board of Native Fish for Tomorrow. And all your NF4T swag needs.

This is a free, family friendly, event. Sunday September 13th from 3pm to 8pm at Watergate Marina in St. Paul, Minnesota.
