This was the last species Chuck needed to complete the slam for the day. I don’t think it’s possible to hook a big fish in a worse place. Ripping current around a bend, big catfish eats in deep, fast water on a medium light spin rod. It ripped upstream as the boat was drifting down. Chuck played this fish like an absolute pro and I tried to keep up with the boat management. We had eddied out just in time to see this monster swim under us. After a long fight, we slid her into the net and the crowd went wild! This day will live in my head for a very long time.

At @nativefish4tomorrow we love to take kids fishing. They get excited about every fish that hits the bank. Their curiosity and enthusiasm is contagious.

Recently we were able to do two very different fishing events. The first was a Scout troop on the MinnesotaRiver. Scouts were able to practice their fishing skills and made serious progress on their fishing merit badges. We learned fish ID, fish handling, where to find fish in a river, and how they migrated.

The most recent event was with @saintpaulparks on the Mississippi River for National Public Lands Day. This was an open house format with effectively no barriers to participation. Lines were out, rods in forked sticks, and people waited for a bite in turn. When a fish bit we handed the rod to whoever's turn it was! And with 5 or 6 lines out they usually didn't have to wait long! We kept a few fish in a "live well" made from a laundry basket so everyone could see a native fish, even if they didn't have time to fish. Lots of great conversations on the river bank as people learned that redhorse are not carp!

On both days the vast majority of fish caught were native species. In fact, I think we only got one invasive each day. Proof these ecosystems are still dominated by native fish.

Lastly, I'd just like to say @NativeFish4tomorrow is run by volunteers. @buffalo_catcher, @kol_eric and @etkhandmade made these two events happen. We provide gear and pay for bait and supplies out of pocket. If you would like to support our work please make a donation online. Next summer there may be additional opportunities to volunteer. Stay tuned.

I have heard it said that Buffalo just “do what Buffalo do”. This one really proved that true. While sight casting to a smallie in a shallow riffle, this buff absolutely hammered a Kreelex on the swing. That was a first. Just another example of why I love these fish so much. A very discerning fish inhaled a fly made up of pure flash. Wild times. Great times!

I get alot of questions about bowfin. One of the main ones is “What bait do you use?”. In which my answer is always “Anything”. Being opportunistic feeder there’s not much they won’t try to eat. But that had me wondering is there a bait out there they won’t eat? I’m always up for a challenge. Figuring out the lure to use wasn’t difficult. With urchin/coike baits gaining popularity in the bass world I knew we had get a bowfin on one. So I called up @the_flyover_angler and explained the mission. I chose to go with a smaller subtle approach and used the @zmanfishingproducts fuzzy nuggetz in a glimmer blue color. @the_flyover_angler chose to use the larger more aggressive approach with a @queentackle hot pink porcupine ball. It didn’t take long after our first casts before we were getting bit. This just further proves you can catch bowfin on nearly anything that moves or smells good to them.

After countless smallmouth trips this fall, it was time to mix it up. Decided to explore some insanely low water spots far, far away from home in search of bowfin. We were rewarded with great fishing! The best 5 fish went for an astonishing 147” and 42 pounds 13 ounces. We also netted over 60 fish in total. One thing I wanted to test along the way… Will a bowfin eat an urchin bait? We found out they really like ‘em! Here are a bunch of fish from the day and a few of the cooler urchin eaters. A few giant fish included. Thanks to @queentackle for the awesome Dead Center Magnum 20 Porcupine Balls! Buy locally. We got ours at @iowariveroutdoors ! #fishing #bigfish #catchandrelease #summer #native

Right now, between trash and wanton waste, it’s hard to consider the Iowa angling community a net positive (➕), even if you personally aren’t a negative (➖).
