Seminole/Muscogee filmmaker Sterlin Harjo’s The Lowdown released its Season 2 trailer on September 30, 2026, ahead of the series’ October 14 return on FX and Hulu in the United States.

Harjo continues as creator, executive producer, writer and director of the eight-episode season, keeping Indigenous creative leadership at the centre of the Tulsa-set series.

Ethan Hawke returns as citizen journalist Lee Raybon, with Tommy Lee Jones and Betty Gilpin joining the cast. Mohawk actress Kaniehtiio Horn, whose roots are in Kahnawà:ke, also returns as Samantha.

The new season follows Lee into another mystery, this time involving a missing prisoner and questions that reach beyond the case itself.

Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in citizen Gavin McKenna made his NHL regular-season debut for the Toronto Maple Leafs on September 29, 2026, facing the Montreal Canadiens at Scotiabank Arena.

The 18-year-old from Whitehorse, Yukon, reached the milestone three months after Toronto selected him first overall in the NHL Draft on June 26.

That selection carried historical significance: McKenna became the second Indigenous player selected first overall, following Dale McCourt of Kitigan Zibi Anishinābeg in 1977.

McKenna has also spoken about wanting Indigenous children to believe in themselves and seeing his role in hockey as an opportunity to set a positive example.

Toronto fell 3–2 to Montreal, but the evening marked the beginning of McKenna’s NHL regular-season career—a new chapter for a young First Nations athlete from the Yukon.

What are your thoughts on McKenna reaching this milestone?

Today, September 30, we honour Orange Shirt Day and the story that helped inspire an Indigenous-led movement of remembrance and learning.

Phyllis Webstad of Stswecem’c Xgat’tem First Nation was six when she arrived at St. Joseph Mission residential school wearing a new orange shirt her grandmother had bought her. The shirt was taken away and never returned.

When Phyllis shared her experience in 2013, her story helped inspire Orange Shirt Day—a day that honours residential school Survivors and their families and remembers the children who never returned home.

September 30 is also Canada’s National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, established as a federal statutory holiday in 2021.

Wearing orange is one way to participate. Listening to Survivors, learning from Indigenous voices and supporting Indigenous-led education can continue beyond a single day.

How can we keep learning beyond September 30?

Indigenous-led NICHI will receive another C$300 million from Canada for its “For Indigenous, By Indigenous” housing initiative, announced September 28, 2026.

The commitment brings federal investment through the National Indigenous Collaborative Housing Incorporated to C$581.5 million, supporting housing for Indigenous people in urban, rural and northern communities.

The funding will support new developments and renovations to existing housing. Indigenous housing providers help shape the initiative and guide project selection, bringing community knowledge into decisions about where and how support is delivered.

According to Indigenous Services Canada, earlier funding has supported approximately 77 projects, contributing to around 3,800 housing units and beds.

The announcement is a funding commitment—not confirmation that all supported housing is complete.

What are your thoughts on Indigenous-led housing decisions?

Lily Gladstone, who has Blackfeet and Nez Perce heritage, and Hualapai actor Kiowa Gordon are attached to star in The Curse of Silver, according to September 28, 2026, entertainment reporting.

Their involvement extends behind the camera: Gordon will co-direct with Geoff Marslett, and both actors are attached as executive producers.

Gladstone grew up on Montana’s Blackfeet Reservation. Gordon is a member of the Hualapai Tribe in Arizona.

The supernatural western follows two former Union soldiers whose arrival with cursed silver brings danger to a Texas–Mexico border town after the Civil War.

Selected for the 2026 Gotham Week Project Market, the film remains in development, with no release date announced. For NPN, the standout is Native talent taking both leading performances and filmmaking roles.

What are your thoughts on this pairing?

Nipissing First Nation announced on September 28, 2026, that more than 32,000 acres have been restored to its reserve in Ontario, Canada, following decades of work.

According to the Nation, a federal order dated May 15 added 32,333.1 acres to Nipissing Indian Reserve No. 10.

Chief and Council formally sought the land’s return in 1968. Throughout the lengthy process, families continued hunting, trapping, gathering medicines and maintaining their connection to the territory.

NFN says the land was not brought back for new development. Bringing it under the Nation’s Land Code will provide clearer rules for its protection and management.

The milestone recognizes a connection that continued across generations. A community celebration is scheduled for October 2 at Duchesnay Hall.

What are your thoughts on this land-return milestone?⛰️🪶

Three First Nations in Manitoba, Canada, are taking different steps to protect moose and the community traditions connected to them.

Bloodvein River First Nation, Misipawistik Cree Nation and Pimicikamak Cree Nation have raised concerns about hunting and the long-term health of local moose populations.

Misipawistik is asking all hunters—including its own members—to voluntarily pause moose harvesting in Game Hunting Area 10. Pimicikamak has also appealed to hunters to refrain. Bloodvein is operating a checkpoint, which remains disputed by the province.

For the communities, moose stewardship connects food security with family sharing, cultural knowledge and future generations.

In a September 24 statement, the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs called for direct discussions with the Nations and disclosure of the information behind provincial hunting decisions.

What are your thoughts on community-led wildlife conservation?🪶

The Modoc Nation has purchased more than 3,000 acres of ancestral homelands in California’s Siskiyou and Modoc counties, reconnecting its citizens with lands near the California–Oregon border.

A September 28, 2026, Jefferson Public Radio report highlights this ongoing effort. The Nation began pursuing homeland purchases in 2017 and formally launched its Homelands Program in 2021.

The work extends beyond ownership. Crews are removing invasive plants, improving wildlife passage and caring for soils, while longer-term plans include restoring wetlands and traditional food sources.

For the Oklahoma-based Nation, these properties also create opportunities to strengthen cultural connections and share knowledge with younger generations.

Separately, the Nation is partnering with the U.S. Forest Service on the 39,000-acre Shapa’sh restoration project. That federal-land partnership is distinct from the acreage it owns.

What are your thoughts on bringing land restoration and cultural reconnection together?⛰️🪶

Menang/Wilman Noongar footballer Shai Bolton won the Norm Smith Medal on September 26, 2026, becoming the eighth First Nations player to receive the honour, according to National Indigenous Times.

The medal recognizes the player judged best on ground in Australia’s AFL Grand Final.

Representing the Fremantle Dockers, Bolton recorded 26 disposals, seven marks and five tackles. He received votes from all five judges, finishing with 10 votes.

Although Fremantle lost to Brisbane, Bolton became only the fifth player to win the award from a losing Grand Final team—and the first since Chris Judd in 2005.

He joins a First Nations honours list that includes Maurice Rioli, Peter Matera, Michael Long, Andrew McLeod, Byron Pickett, Cyril Rioli and Bobby Hill.

What are your thoughts on Bolton’s place in First Nations sporting history?

The Mohegan Tribe’s Connecticut Sun chapter reached its final home game on September 24, 2026, with a 95–81 victory over the Toronto Tempo at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.

The farewell closes a 24-season Connecticut run ahead of the franchise’s move to Houston in 2027.

Mohegan announced the $300 million sale agreement in March. The WNBA and NBA approved the sale to Houston Rockets owner Tilman J. Fertitta and the relocation on May 13.

The Tribe purchased the former Orlando Miracle in 2003 and brought the team to Connecticut, becoming the first Native American Tribe to own a professional sports team.

That history remains part of the Sun’s legacy: a Tribal nation helped build a lasting home for women’s professional basketball. At the farewell game, longtime supporters and former players were recognized.

What are your thoughts on this chapter in women’s basketball? 🪶

Nipissing First Nation is launching a major effort to restore Mnoomin, or wild rice, along approximately 59 kilometres of Lake Nipissing shoreline.

Announced September 25, Revitalizing Mnoomin is supported by C$249,818 through the Resilient Agricultural Landscape Program – Indigenous Initiatives Program.

Led by NFN’s Environment Department with Korotu Technology, the project will remove invasive phragmites, replant Mnoomin in priority areas and combine traditional knowledge with aerial surveys and digital mapping.

For the Nbisiing Nishinaabeg, Mnoomin is deeply connected to food, culture, identity and knowledge passed between generations. The long-term goal is to re-establish it as a sustainable community food source while improving biodiversity, water quality and shoreline health.

Community members will also have opportunities to plant, harvest and share knowledge together.

What are your thoughts on restoring traditional foods for future generations?🌱🪶

The Yurok Tribe has been awarded $247,900 to support prairie restoration and wildlife habitat in its ancestral territory in California.

Announced through the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation’s September 24 funding round, the project includes removing invasive plants, seeding native grasses and cultural burning. The planned work aims to improve habitat for elk, deer and black bears while strengthening traditional land-care practices.

Removing competing vegetation and supporting native grasses are intended to improve the plants available for wildlife to feed on.

The award is part of a broader $13.3 million round supporting 14 conservation projects across the western United States. This announcement confirms funding—not that restoration is complete.

What are your thoughts on supporting Tribal-led habitat restoration?🪶
