The latest addition to the MaadCode series ✨🙌🏾 MaadCode: origins started to take shape when I was asked what the full Maadphabet character set looked like. The conversations I’ve had with folks about the work since last summer brought this together. A little less mystery, a little more indexing. The set of 42 characters, and the ingredients to the landscapes, laid out in their original forms and colors. This isn’t in alphabetical order, but the order they came to me ✨ what stands out to you?

Meet our new 2026-2027 Craft Youth Culture (CYC) Teaching Artist!✨ @natou.studio

Natou Fall is a Senegalese-American interdisciplinary artist based in Los Angeles. Trained in architecture, she works across sculpture, oil pastel, film, and cosmetics to explore diasporic inheritance, queerness, and coded language. Through casting and assemblage, her practice reclaims beauty and self-expression while examining Black queer interiority, mythology, and ancestral knowledge. Her work has been exhibited at BUTTER Art Fair, Context Projects, Band of Vices, and Soho House.

We invite all Los Angeles-based youth to apply to Craft Contemporary's free weekly Saturday art program, CYC 2026-2027!

I couldn’t let #pridemonth🌈 end without giving François "Féral" Benga his flowers. The only documented, openly queer Senegalese artist of the 20th century. A dancer. A muse of modernism. My queer ancestor. Before leaving for Ireland I began a body of work dedicated to celebrating his life, his bravery, and his art. A contemporary of Josephine Baker, his life and story mean more to me than I can articulate in this post. The work I’ve begun is a celebration of the fact that Africa has and always will be Queer. Being raised in a culture that is violently homophobic in the name of religion and internalized white supremacist ideology, Féral’s work and the work he inspired is a beacon of hope. Your being and heritage may be at odds, but to live a joyous queer life whatever the cost is the ultimate strength. To all my queer folx of Senegalese descent and to anyone raised to believe that who they are is wrong or "against nature," I see you, you matter, I love you, and pray with all my heart that you are free to safely be your truest self one day. I made a series of collages during my residency to explore some ideas and I’m back in the studio expanding on my discoveries. Much love.
